NCAA "clarifies" ruling in Anson Aroz ejection from Friday's loss in Eugene Regional It's a play that is being discussed in the college baseball world. It's a play Oregon baseball or their fans won't soon forget. In Oregon's 6-5 loss to Utah Valley in the Eugene Regional Friday night at PK Park, the Ducks were in the middle of a rally during the seventh inning. Chase Meggers seemingly hit a shallow fly to left field, where Anson Aroz tagged up and seemingly scored to make it 6-5 Utah Valley with just one out. But when Aroz arrived at home plate, it was blocked, and Aroz collided with the Wolverine catcher. Collisions like these are rare in college baseball now, as the catcher has to give the runner a clear lane to get to home plate. When the play happened live, it looked as if Aroz dropped down to avoid head-to-head contact, and his momentum carried him to the catcher. Aroz was called safe, and naturally, Utah Valley challenged the play. After a review of play that lasted nearly eight minutes, it was determined Aroz's intent was "malicious" and he was ruled out. Not only was he ruled out, Aroz was ejected from the game and ineligible to play in the following game. It cost Oregon a precious run and virtually killed the rally. Of course, the Ducks went on to lose by one run. The call mystified everyone, and the NCAA offered up an explanation of the ruling Saturday morning. In short, the NCAA said Aroz should have avoided the collision. They failed to take into account the catcher did not have the ball and Aroz didn't have a path to the plate. They did not explain what he should have done to avoid the unavoidable. Oregon vs Cal Poly live updates, score: Highlights, for NCAA Tournament game

Oregon vs Cal Poly live updates, score: Highlights, for NCAA Tournament game The Oregon Ducks will take on the Cal Poly Mustangs on Saturday afternoon at PK Park in an NCAA Tournament elimination game, with the season hanging in the balance for both teams. With a victory, either team would advance to Sunday's action, facing off against the loser of the game between the Arizona Wildcats and Utah Valley Wolverines. A loss would end the season for whichever team does not advance. This is not a situation that the Ducks saw themselves in on Friday night entering their game against Utah Valley, but because of a brutal call from the umpire crew that wiped a run off of the board in the bottom of the 8th inning with Oregon making a comeback attempt, the Ducks fell, 6-5, on Friday night and were ushered into the loser's bracket. Because of the call, which eventually saw left fielder Anson Aroz ejected from the game, the Ducks will be without one of their top players on Saturday, with Aroz ruled ineligible for the game vs. Cal Poly. Cal Poly lost to Arizona earlier on Friday afternoon by a score of 3-2. The Wildcats put up three runs in the second inning to take a quick lead, and while the Mustangs tried to chip away over the course of the game, their offense simply came up short. Oregon Duck fans irate over controversial call in NCAA Tournament

Oregon Duck fans irate over controversial call in NCAA Tournament The Oregon Ducks were trailing 6-4 in the bottom of the 8th inning, but trying to make a run and mount a comeback against the Utah Valley Wolverines in the Eugene Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Then all hell broke loose. With no outs and runners on the corner, a sacrifice fly led to Anson Aroz tagging up and running home. The throw was bobbled by the catcher, and a collision took place. Aroz was ruled safe, but Utah Valley challenged the call for "malicious contact." Meanwhile, there was also a conversation about obstruction from the catcher. After about a 10-minute review, the umpires decided that it was, in fact, malicious contact, and the runner was ruled out, making it a double play, and making it a 6-4 game with two outs, rather than 6-5 with one out. Oregon head coach Mark Wasikowski was irate at the call, which resulted in Aroz being ejected from the game and ruled ineligible for Saturday's game as well. Here's a look at how fans reacted to the call on social media. An Insane Call In Disbelief Geoff Schwartz Isn't Happy Where Have We Seen This Before? Aroz Had No Choice... Oregon baseball opens Big Ten tournament with win over Michigan State

Oregon baseball opens Big Ten tournament with win over Michigan State Oregon and Omaha seem like a pretty good fit. The Oregon baseball team opened the Big Ten tournament with a 4-2 win over Michigan State on Thursday night. The Ducks are hoping this is just the first of many wins in Charles Schwab Stadium, the same place that the College World Series in held. Where the conference tournament is concerned, this game didn't mean anything as the Ducks have to defeat Nebraska Friday night in order to advance to the semifinals, whether they defeated Michigan State or not. But Oregon is determined to end this tournament 4-0 and improve their rankings, computer or otherwise, in order to host a regional next week and possibly be a national seed to host a Super Regional in two weeks. After finding themselves down 1-0 in the first inning, Oregon managed to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning on Anson Aroz's two-run double down the left field line. That was all starter Ian Umlandt needed as he shut down the Spartans for 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out five. But when he left, the Ducks were knotted up at 2-2. That tie didn't last for long as Oregon scored two in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. Drew Smith lined one to left that scored pinch runner Jax Gimenez and Aroz drove in his third run of the day on a single to right. From there, it was Santiago Garcia pitching a scoreless eighth and closer Seth Maddox pitching a perfect ninth inning to secure the victory. Oregon will now face the Cornhuskers in a must-win game for the right to play Penn State in the semi-finals on Saturday. Nebraska is the No. 8 seed in the tournament. The Ducks and Huskers did not play in the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 4 pm PST.

Oregon baseball has successful 3-1 East Coast road trip

Oregon baseball has successful 3-1 East Coast road trip Flying to the East Coast for any team out West is always an iffy proposition. But for the Oregon Ducks baseball team, it wasn't a problem at all. The Ducks flew to Maryland for their first Big Ten series on the other side of the country and Oregon was able to win the series two games to one. After the Friday game was rained out, the two teams met Saturday afternoon where the Ducks had to rally with two runs in the top of the ninth and hold on for an exciting 5-4 win. Drew Smith roped a single into right field to score Anson Aroz to tie the game at 4-4. A Smith eventually found himself at third base with one out when Ryan Cooney flew out to deep left for the sacrifice fly and the 5-4 lead. Seth Maddox threw a flawless ninth and earned his first win of the season. Things didn't go so well for Oregon in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday as the Terrapins took an easy 12-2 victory. Starting pitcher Collin Clarke just didn't have his good stuff on the mound and Maryland took advantage by scoring four runs in four innings off of Clarke. Things only got worse when reliever Ryan Featherston came in. He allowed four more runs in an inning and a third as Maryland blew the game wide open with six runs in the sixth. In the nightcap, it was just the opposite. Everything went right for the Ducks and they took a 13-3 win to take the series. Starter Jason Reitz went seven innings, giving up just two earned runs and striking out 11 for his first win as a Duck. The score was 3-3 in the fifth, but the Ducks scored five runs in that frame to blow the game wide open. Mason Neville and Jacob Walsh each homered in that inning to account for the runs. Oregon scored four more runs in the ninth inning for good measure. It was no rest for the weary as Oregon travelled just outside Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown. Oregon smashed two grand slams, one from Neville and another blast from Carter Garate for the 12-1 win over the Hoyas. Now, the Ducks come home for a big eight-game homestand, beginning with a three-game series with first-place holder UCLA, who holds a 12-3 league mark and 28-7 overall. Oregon is currently in third place, 1.5 games behind the Bruins at 12-6 in Big Ten action and 25-10 overall. Iowa is between the two West Coast teams at 14-4 in league play.
