Pet Gala 2025: Which celebrity look inspired these couture canines?

While the first Monday in May is renowned for the Met Gala, where the rich and famous show off their most avant-garde looks, the third Monday offers a charming alternative – the Pet Gala. Hosted by Anthony Rubio, the pet couture expert, the event features a red carpet of dogs dressed in meticulously crafted replicas of the Met Gala looks from two weeks prior. This year included canine counterparts to The View host Whoopi Goldberg, and singers Chappel Roan and Cynthia Erivo. Attendees at the 2025 Pet Gala, for which tickets cost $300 (£236), were welcomed by a decorative flower wall, and a micro-red carpet which allowed the dogs to parade their couture looks. The annual fashion show raises money for the American Kennel Club's Museum of the Dog – a New York museum that hosts one of the largest collections of dog-based art to support their mission to 'educate the public about the human-canine bond'. Rubio, lead 'Pet Couturier' for the fashion show, has been recreating his favourite Met Gala looks on pets since 2013, and said the event is 'his favourite time of the year'. With just two weeks to fashion the looks after seeing the stars walk the carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he told Good Morning America: 'I'm on three days with maybe three hours of sleep, it's been a labour of love.' Tickets to the Met Gala cost $75,000 and those after a table will need to hand over at least another $350,000. This year's theme, emulated on the canine models, was 'tailored for you', inspired by the Met's spring exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which explores how men's style has shaped transatlantic black identities. Rubio, who is also a womenswear designer, added: 'Fashion week is my vision but the Pet Gala is a challenge in adaptation. 'It pushes me to be more creative, and I absolutely thrive on it.' He emphasised that the dogs' 'comfort and safety always come first' and this year the models ranged from Hershey the Maltese-poodle mix, to Bastian the terrier and Honey Bunches the Pomeranian.

When pet couturier recreated Lady Gaga's iconic 2019's MET Gala entrance look

Lady Gaga's arrival at the 2019 MET Gala remains one of the most memorable moments in the event's history. Wearing a voluminous bright pink gown, Gaga captivated the audience with a theatrical performance that included multiple dramatic outfit changes on the red carpet. Her daring and playful style soon gained recognition, and pet fashion designer Anthony Rubio even paid tribute to her. Uncanny resemblance Anthony Rubio, known for his creative and detailed designs for pets, recreated Lady Gaga's famous pink gown for Kimba, a charming chihuahua. Using fuchsia silk taffeta, Rubio carefully crafted a miniature version of the gown. Rubio's recreation impressed the audience at his runway show, much like Gaga's original appearance fascinated the MET Gala crowd. His celebration of American design through the unique lens of canine couture included this imaginative tribute. Anthony Rubio, a New York-based dog model, is well known for his ability to recreate classic MET Gala styles. His designs are charming and appealing because they are often described as creative and unorthodox. Anthony's Lil X inspiration Rubio's creative projects extended beyond Lady Gaga's appearance. Rubio found fresh inspiration in 2021 when rapper Lil Nas X debuted at the MET Gala wearing a striking custom outfit designed by Donatella Versace. Similar to Gaga, Lil Nas X unveiled several different outfits while using the MET Gala stairs as a stage. For Kimba's brother Bogie, Rubio re-created the rapper's royal golden overcoat, complete with elaborate beadwork. Crafted from golden velvet and featuring weeks of detailed hand-sewn beadwork, the outfit reflected the grandeur of the original design. Apart from this, Rubio has also been influenced by celebrities like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jessica Chastain, Bad Bunny, and Kendall Jenner. His company, Anthony Rubio's Canine Couture, is known for employing high-quality materials while paying close attention to the pets' comfort and security. Rubio hinted at more imaginative designs in an Instagram post ahead of the 2023 MET Gala. His commitment to using pet fashion to recreate the glamour of the MET Gala remains a delightful and adorable viewpoint on high-fashion occasions.
