Authorities form teams to prevent cattle slaughter during Bakrid in Chikkamagaluru

Chikkamagaluru: State govt directed authorities to ensure that cows are not slaughtered on Bakrid, which falls on Saturday. No cow, calf, ox, or buffalo can be killed during the festival. To ensure its implementation, the Chikkamagaluru district administration formed teams to monitor the situation. The authorities also formed a task force to strictly implement the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020, which is popularly known as the Anti-Cow Slaughter Act. During the festival, there is a possibility of illegal transport and slaughter of cattle, oxen, calves, and camel. To prevent this, district authorities instructed officials to coordinate, and be active in their respective areas from June 5 to 10. Two separate teams will monitor activities to prevent animal slaughter, in Chikkamagaluru city and rural areas. Staff from each taluk will operate in other parts of the district, such as Mudigere, Kalasa, Sringeri, Koppa, Narasimharajapura, Tarikere, Ajjampura, and Kadur taluks. These teams will primarily include officers from city council, town council, taluk panchayat, and town panchayat, as well as officials from the animal husbandry department and police sub-inspectors, according to the DC CN Meena Nagaraj. Despite measures, illegal transportation of cattle is rampant in parts of Narasimharaja Pura taluk. A few days ago, right-wing activists, along with the police, rescued several cattle. In addition, cattle theft was averted by villagers recently. According to locals, the thieves transport cattle to Shivamogga, and urged police to take stringent measures to prevent the theft.
