Panic in Mumbai as drone violates ban in Kandivali

Panic gripped Bandar Pakhadi of Kandivali in Mumbai when residents spotted a drone flying in the area despite a city-wide ban on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), an official said on Sunday. Officials of Charkop Police Station, Kandivali West, registered a case and launched investigations soon after residents contacted them to complain about the presence of a drone in their area on Saturday midnight, an official said. "There was panic among residents of some upscale housing societies when the drone came close to the windows of flats on the top," he said. The police have launched a hunt for the operator of the drone that is reported to have vanished after a flight lasting a few minutes. Strict drone regulations were implemented in Mumbai soon after the launch of Operation Sindoor. The Mumbai Police had issued a notification banning the use of UAVs and other aerial equipment till July 4. The restrictions on the use of aerial equipment were imposed under section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code. The provisions permit a ban on the use of drones, aircraft, paragliders, and paramotors due to security reasons. Earlier, three people linked to a realty firm were questioned for flying a drone on Friday in SEEPZ area of Andheri East for filming a promotional video for a client. An FIR was also registered in the matter after the Anti-Terrorist Squad of MIDC Police received information about the drone activity on Friday night. Flying drones, paragliders, and aerial equipment has also been banned in Pune city till June 12. Last month, Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Sharma ordered the curbs and said the ban would not come in the way of surveillance operations by the Police Department, with formal approval. The Pune district administration had also issued an order in March imposing a ban on aerial equipment after multiple complaints were received in Baramati, Daund and Shirur talukas.

Interrogation concludes in bomb plot case

Vizianagaram: The interrogation in the high-profile bomb conspiracy case involving suspects Siraj and Sameer concluded on Wednesday. In a significant development, the Two Town police are set to present the accused in court. A joint investigation team, comprising officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), the Counter-Intelligence Unit, and the Two Town Police, has been probing the suspects over the past six days at the police training school in Vizianagaram. Initial reports indicate that Siraj and Sameer were uncooperative during the first two days of questioning. However, Siraj began to speak on the third day of interrogation, leading to major revelations. He reportedly confessed to planning bomb blasts at multiple locations across the country and admitted to maintaining contact with handlers in not only Saudi Arabia and Oman but also other foreign countries. The findings of the investigation team are expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming legal proceedings. The Vizianagaram police initiated the interrogation of the two terror suspects, Siraj and Sameer, in connection with their procurement of explosive materials and their plans to execute blasts in Andhra Pradesh. The police obtained custody of the two accused for interrogation after a court in Vizianagaram granted a one-week period on May 22. Siraj and Sameer have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Explosives Act, and various sections under the BNS. Although the police requested a ten-day custody period for interrogation, after two days of legal arguments, the court granted seven-day custody with strict conditions on Thursday night. On Friday morning, the Vizianagaram police transported the accused from central prison in Vizag city, where they had been held on judicial remand since May 18, to the Police Training College in Vizianagaram for questioning. The primary investigation by the Vizianagaram police revealed that Siraj was attracted to extremism and met like-minded individuals, such as Sameer, through social media platforms. The police also received information indicating that the accused had plans to carry out blasts in Vizianagaram, Hyderabad, Delhi, and other cities. They are believed to have close contacts with Islamic sympathizers and have formed a group that includes 20 sleeper cells.

Maharashtra ATS Probes Funds Diversions After Mysterious QR Code Appears At Nagpur Shrine

Last Updated: It has come to light that the ATS has been entrusted with the responsibility of identifying QR codes, particularly those displayed at religious sites. After enigmatic QR codes surfaced at various shrines across Maharashtra, including Nagpur, the state's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has carried out clandestine operations, to detect unauthorised and suspicious funding through third-party digital payments and other online and offline modes, Times of India reported citing sources. On Wednesday, ATS officers lodged a complaint at the Kapil Nagar police station against Mohd Ejaz Ansari after the discovery of a banner bearing a QR code at a Qamar Colony shrine, where Ansari holds no position within the shrine's governing body. While the stated purpose of the fundraising initiative was the construction of a religious institution for women, the investigation uncovered that the QR code was redirecting donated funds to Ansari's accounts held at a nationalised bank's Chhaoni branch. The investigative agency is currently probing the subsequent transaction of these funds. According to security agency sources who spoke with TOI, the reason behind a non-member of the shrine's management erecting the fundraising banner warrants investigation. 'The Kapil Nagar police have summoned both the individual associated with the QR code's account and the shrine's management committee to ascertain the facts. The shrine's leadership needs to clarify if they were aware of the QR code displayed on their premises. Furthermore, the account holder must provide evidence detailing how the collected funds were utilized," an ATS official explained. It has come to light that the ATS has been entrusted with the responsibility of identifying QR codes, particularly those displayed at religious sites, that could potentially be exploited for financing extremist groups. While legitimate avenues for funding religious or social activities are being mapped out, intelligence agencies remain vigilant concerning suspicious QR codes used to gather funds in support of terrorist and sabotage activities worldwide, including in various locations throughout India. The development came after the ghastly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam which claimed the lives of 26 individuals. Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack, although it later backtracked after massive global outrage. India launched 'precision strikes" under Operation Sindoor on nine terror targets in Pakistan and PoK following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. The strikes killed at least 10 family members of JeM chief Masood Azhar and four close aides. The sites targeted were the Pakistani bases at Rafiqui (Shorkot, Jhang), Murid (Chakwal), Nur Khan (Chaklala, Rawalpindi) Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur and Chunian (Kasur). In the strikes, the air bases in Skardu, Bholari, Jacobabad and Sargodha suffered extensive damage. First Published: May 16, 2025, 23:06 IST
