Crackdown on begging: 335 arrested since start of Ramadan
The Ministry of Social Development announced that its Anti-Vagrancy Unit has apprehended 335 beggars since the beginning of Ramadan on March 1.
According to the ministry, a total of 1,820 individuals have been detained for begging since the start of the year, following 1,150 campaigns conducted across the kingdom.
The ministry emphasized that efforts to combat begging are being intensified during Ramadan, with teams operating around the clock in commercial areas, traffic intersections, and public spaces. These campaigns are carried out in coordination with the Public Security Directorate (PSD) and judicial authorities.
Additionally, the ministry has instructed affiliated charities to ramp up awareness campaigns on the issue, stressing that begging is a punishable offense under Article 389 of the Jordanian Penal Code. Citizens can report cases of begging through the ministry's hotline at 0793344330.
