Shaw Festival has raised 70 per cent of $150M goal to reinvent theatre institution
The Shaw Festival says it's raised 70 per cent of the $150 million it needs to reinvent the theatre institution's role in southern Ontario. Artistic director Tim Carroll says the $110 million the festival has raised so far comes from a combination of the province, the federal government and private donations. He says they're now soliciting donations more broadly because they see the finish line in sight. The Shaw Festival in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ont., plans to expand its footprint with an artists' village beside the current Festival Theatre that will include performance and classroom spaces. The organization also plans to create a new downtown campus, including a new theatre to replace the crumbling Royal George Theatre. The Shaw says it wants to create a community hub that brings people together and encourages deeper engagement with the theatre. Carroll says theatregoers are already inspired by what they see on stage, and the Shaw plans to foster that inspiration. 'In future you will come to 'Anything Goes,' and then you can go and take a tap dance class, or you can come to a comedy show and you can then go and take an improv class or a comedy class,' he said Monday. He said it will go beyond performance — there will also be classes for technical theatre skills such as scene design. 'We want everyone to be able to find where their joy is and to be able to release their own artist,' Carroll said. This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 26, 2025.

He made an appearance in court today over the alleged charges 'ATTACK' CLAIMS Glasgow podcast host James English could call nine defence witnesses in domestic abuse trial A SCOTS podcaster may call up to nine defence witnesses in any forthcoming domestic abuse trial, a court heard. James English, 42, is accused of carrying out the offence at a flat in Glasgow's Argyle Street between July 2022 and November 2023. He is also claimed to have kept control of aspects of her life including her money and contact with loved ones. Linda Findlay, defending, told the court: "I have been told of five potential defence witnesses including a 15-year-old. "I need to take statements from these witnesses. "This is something that will take some time - it cannot be done in five minutes. Advertisement "There is potentially another four witnesses in addition to the five. "With another hearing, we will be able to see how many defence witnesses there are." An allegation of violence includes kicking her on the body causing her to fall off of a bed and striking an item of furniture, seizing her on the body and pinning her against a wall. English is also said to have searched her belongings for evidence of infidelity and monitored and interrogated her mobile phone for evidence of infidelity. Advertisement English is claimed to have seized her by the neck, compressed it and pinned her against a door when she was pregnant. He is further alleged to have seized her on the head and pressed his thumbs into her eyebrows to her injury when she was pregnant. Another claim is that English controlled the amount of money she had access to and repeatedly threatened to withdraw her access to it. English is alleged to have driven her on a number of occasions to a train station and on attending there drive her home. English is alleged to have repeatedly threatened to remove a child from her care. Another claim is that English repeatedly criticised her abilities as a mother and refused to let her breastfeed in public. English is further charged with repeatedly demanding that she delete her social media platforms and restricted her use of social media platforms in an attempt to restrict her financial independence. A further allegation says he struck her on the face with an open hand. English denies all the charges.
