EU and India launch 11th round of FTA talks, aim to conclude this year

India and the European Union have begun the 11th round of negotiations for their proposed Free Trade Agreement, with discussions underway in New Delhi from May 13 to 16. The current phase focuses on finalising areas of early agreement to expedite the deal's initial stage. The latest round follows a meeting between commerce minister Piyush Goyal and EU officials in Brussels on May 1 to assess progress and advance the talks, Apparel Resources India reported. Both sides are aiming to conclude the full agreement by the end of the year, a timeline endorsed by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi. The FTA is set to proceed in two phases. The first will address topics where both parties are largely aligned, while more complex matters are scheduled for resolution later this year. Key issues under discussion include market access for goods and services, investment rules, and government procurement. The EU is seeking reduced tariffs on products such as wines, automobiles, and medical devices, along with stronger intellectual property protections. India, in turn, is pushing for greater access for exports including pharmaceuticals, garments, and machinery. Negotiations, which resumed in June 2022 after an eight-year gap, now cover 23 chapters. The EU remains India's largest trading partner, with bilateral goods trade reaching $137.41 billion in the 2024 financial year.
