WWDC 2025: Key New Upgrades Coming To iPhone, iPad And Mac
Apple's World Wide Developers Conference is coming to its end, and there have been a slew of announcements, big and small. For the iPhone, iPad, Mac and more, there were innovations across the board. Here's what caught my eye. WWDC25 For the first time ever, there's an overarching industrial design which will show up on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac and even Apple Watch. Liquid Glass is a subtle but eye-catching overlay. It makes icons look like they're made of sheets of non-reflective glass, it gets involved in button finishes and even how numbers look on a lock screen. Talking of the lock screen, as you swipe up to go to the home screen, check out the bottom left corner of the lock: it has the rainbow reflectivity of real glass. It's awesome. Though there was no big Apple Intelligence announcement this year, but that was always part of the plan, it seems. Apple sees AI as a tool, not a destination. It's a way to make its apps and hardware better. Of course, there were new Apple Intelligence upgrades, but they were permeated through the company's announcements. Like new Genmoji, improved Image Playground and a new way to use Visual Intelligence. But other features are coming which will use AI. Like these features, for instance. A call from an unknown number will go straight to a recording asking the caller to say their name and purpose. That's then presented on screen and you can choose to take the call or not. Similarly, when you're on hold, the iPhone can hold your place in the queue, so you don't have to listen to the hold music (though pity the poor iPhone that does), and reconnect you when a human being returns to the call. Apple's software now has the same number across all platforms. So, iOS 18, macOS 15 and watchOS 11 are now iOS 26, macOS 26 and watchOS 26. The number refers to the year in which the OS will be mostly used. Apple saved the iPad until last in the keynote and you can see why. This is the biggest update the iPad has ever had, adding windows that work so similarly to the Mac that for many people the question, 'Why would I need a Mac?' is now front-and-center. There are folders in the dock, a menu bar that vanishes when you're not using it, and Preview, the highly useful Apple Mac app, comes to iPad.
