Two M-E 8th graders create award winning app
ENDWELL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Two Maine-Endwell Middle School students are headed to Washington DC after creating an award-winning app.
8th graders Andrew Appleman and Priya Riegle were the winners of the latest Congressional App Challenge which was sponsored by former Congressman Marc Molinaro.
Their app, EnviroScope, is meant to give people a way to connect with others about environmental concerns and to communicate with their Congressional representative directly.
Riegle says an app can help people address environmental concerns near their homes.
'We were brainstorming ideas, me and Andrew, and we thought of the environment. We were talking about Onondaga Lake that it was pretty dirty. We thought we should make an app about how we could help other areas nearby and spread awareness about it,' said Riegle.
The app has five features: get involved, get inspired, get informed, get in contact and get rewards.
Appleman says a great way to engage a younger audience.
'Streaks and daily goals. You can feel good about yourself when you complete the goals and see yourself up on the leaderboard,' said Appleman.
The students envision users creating messages on the app to organize cleanups or advertise other environmental efforts.
Appleman and Riegle will travel to Washington DC to present their app this Spring along with winners from across the country.
