Sunderland's Wembley hero makes £220m mark & causes TV apology before final exit
Outgoing Sunderland winger Tommy Watson's stunning final contribution in a Black Cats shirt means Regis Le Bris' side will join him in the Premier League next season As far as leaving presents go, it will probably never be beaten. Tommy Watson was always going to play in the Premier League next year after agreeing to join Brighton this summer - his final act in a Sunderland shirt ensured that he would take his now former club with him. The 19-year-old sent an inch-perfect strike into the bottom corner beyond Michael Cooper in the 95th minute to steal all the headlines in the Championship play-off final and cap a fine Sunderland fightback. It looked as though the Black Cats' nine lives were up before Eliezer Mayenda unleashed a thunderbolt from nowhere to cancel out Tyrese Campbell's slick first half opener. And then it was over to Watson: a player who wasn't even included on the match programme. His final touch in a Sunderland shirt will bank the club a huge £220million bounty to further sweeten their return to the top-flight, as if that were necessary. Understandably, the teenager was euphoric at the final whistle. Even Sky Sports could forgive his X-rated response when he was asked to try and summarise his feelings. "I think my celebration said it all, I can't really put it into words to be honest, just look around it's f***ing unbelievable," he said. The timing of Watson's £10million switch to Brighton being confirmed last month - on April Fools Day no less - was not universally well received to say the least given the club's push for promotion. But nobody was grumbling on Saturday as 40,000 plus Sunderland fans started the party of their lives under the famous Wembley arch. The unfortunate Luke O'Nien, forced off with a dislocated shoulder after just two minutes, summed it up best. "I'm so proud of this club and these boys - I can't believe what's just happened," he told Sky Sports. "I've never felt anxiety like that - but the gaffer said if you get one goal who knows what can happen. Those boys, Tommy Watson - Sunderland legend. They're all Sunderland legends. I am just delighted to play a part in the happiness. What am I saying, I didn't play a part, I did nothing! I was just there on the side watching - I covered more ground celebrating when Eliezer and Tommy scored." For every winner at Wembley, there is no worse place to lose. Sheffield United and their fans know only too well the pain of play-off heartbreak and this one will take time to digest. Former Sheffield United defender Chris Basham was in disbelief, saying: "Sheffield United looked really comfortable, they were favourites and they were outstanding they looked like they were going to win it but after 60 minutes to be fair to Sunderland came back into it and then came the sucker punch. "It's so disappointing. It's a kick in the teeth and stomach and I don't know why we don't win here. It's happened to me as a players and it's happened here today. It's horrible." But Watson will sleep easy tonight after penning the dream ending to his Sunderland story. "I've been thinking about this for weeks," he said post-match. "I think it was written, I couldn't have pictured it any better." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Burger King announces buy one, get one free deal for popular menu item
By Customers get a free Whopper after purchasing one at full price. The deal is at most of the chain's 6,600 US restaurants. Royal Perks members can get the offer by ordering on the app or website, or by giving a six-digit code to a cashier. The deal can be used once a day until it ends on Sunday. Fans can also keep having Whoppers their way by getting absurdly creative with their burger orders . Anyone who misses out on this whopping good deal can still grab a $5 Duo or $7 Trio meal . Burger King has already offered several unbeatable deals at participating locations this year. Rewards members have been able to discounted cheeseburgers more than once, and the chain celebrated April Fools Day with free onions rings for every $1 or more purchase. However, Whoppers are the must-have items featured in multiple deals with 1.3 billion sold every year. 'At Burger King, we've been serving up mouthwatering burgers since 1954,' read Burger King's website. 'Each day, over 11 million guests visit a Burger King restaurant somewhere in the world. With locations in more than 100 countries and US territories, the original Home of the Whopper has a global reach that other QSR burger franchise opportunities can't match.' Burger King is currently slam dunking in sales, and its parent company, Restaurant Brands International, credited the chain for its recently successful net sales. The company's net sales grew 26 percent this quarter compared to its resulting revenue from this time last year. Burger King also nabbed a 1.5 percent same-store US sales growth this quarter, which beat StreetAccount's expectations. The successful sales haven't stopped Burger King franchisees from struggling. One of its biggest, Consolidated Burger Holdings, filed for bankruptcy protection this month. The chain had been operating 75 restaurants across two states before quietly closing locations. Its total store count is down to 57, and more closures may be on the way to cut bankruptcy costs. This, along with filings from its former franchisees TOMS King and Meridian Restaurants Unlimited , have been the result of struggles such as product price hikes and inflation.

Would you eat this Subway sandwich? See the new dessert the U.S. won't get
Sandwich chain Subway has rolled out a sweet concoction for fans that includes an Easter favorite, Cadbury Creme Eggs. Don't go looking for it at your favorite Subway, though. It's so limited you won't be able to get it in Ohio. Here's why. A picture of the "dessert," aptly named the Cadbury Creme Egg SubMelt, was shared on Instagram by food influencer Snackolator. It showed a Subway sandwich roll filled with melted Cadbury Creme Eggs. "This might violate just about all laws of nature, Subway had a new Cadbury Creme Egg SubMelt and it was *not* a late April Fools Day joke!" he wrote. As the name implies, several Cadbury Creme Eggs were placed on top the sandwich bread and toasted on the outside to melt the chocolate. However, the dessert was only available in the U.K. in 2023. "Just as with Subway's recent footlong creations here in the states, they have decided to just get crazy with it and release a very limited @cadburyuk Creme Egg sub at just four locations in the UK in 2023," wrote Snackolator in an Instagram post. "This was exactly what it looks like — a Subway sub roll filled with melted Cadbury Creme Eggs." Just like the sandwich itself, the appeal might have been limited. Back in 2023, Subway first introduced the melted chocolate Easter egg sandwich for a limited time to just a few locations in the U.K. Now, it's back, and according to Snackolator (who isn't too eager to try the dessert), the SubMelts were part of a free giveaway. There's no indication that the Cadbury Creme Egg SubMelt will make its way to the U.S., but Americans can still try the chain's other sweet offerings, including the footlong sandwich cookie, the regular footlong cookie, and other cookie flavors. There are 947 Subway locations in the Buckeye State, according to ScrapeHero. This includes 34 in Cincinnati, 54 in Columbus, and 18 in Akron, per Subway's website. Teenager faces long road to recovery after SUV hits school bus, flipping it on its side
The Brief On April 1, April Fool's Day, an SUV crashed into the side of a bus, causing it to roll on its side on Interstate 10. The bus was filled with students from Lee Williams High School, one of them Katie Holmes. Holmes, who has gone through several surgeries since, remembers calling her mom, who initially thought it was a joke. MARANA, Ariz. - On April 1, the driver of an SUV crashed into the side of a bus full of students from Kingman, causing the bus to roll onto its side along Interstate 10. Katie Holmes, 17, was headed to a school conference when her life was literally flipped upside down. She remembers calling her mom to let her know what had happened. A conversation hard for any parent to hear. Why you should care "My response was, it's April Fools Day. This isn't funny," said mom Julie Holmes. "You know, I'm teaching my class and she said, 'no, mom. We rolled the bus. I'm really hurt' and it was… it was heartbreaking. Everything just stopped." Katie was one of several Lee Williams High School students rushed to the hospital. "At that point, it's the hardest, hardest thing ever to think the worst. When someone tells you, you need to pull over," said Julie. Doctors told her Katie's injuries were more extreme than expected and they needed to operate on her. "She had four surgeries," said Julie. Katie said getting out of surgery, knowing people were there for her made all the difference. "I had the first one and I didn't get out for about 5 hours, I think. So when I actually got out, most of the people were actually waiting for me, which was honestly so nice. I don't know what I would have done if I were alone," said Katie. What we know Katie remembers the moments surrounding the crash. "Once we started going back the other way, I started to realize that there was an issue and once I started to see the bus tilt, I looked up and I noticed things were starting to turn sideways. And I was like, okay, we're doing this," Katie said. "When I opened my eyes there was plenty of dust. So much I held my breath until I got out of the bus." She's spent every day since in the hospital with family, friends and stuffed animals by her side. "It's going to be a long, long period of time before this settles and I think it's going to keep going until Mr. Rodriguez is convicted," said her mom Julie. What's next The driver of the SUV - Nicolas Rodriguez - tested positive for marijuana and, according to court documents, admitted to smoking marijuana two days before. He's accused of three felony counts of aggravated assault and is being held on a $100,000 bond. What you can do A GoFundMe page was created to help support Katie's recovery.
