Steelers will play in NFL's first-ever regular season game in Ireland during 2025 season

The Steelers are headed to Ireland! The team announced Monday that it will be the designated team to play in Dublin in 2025. It's the first overseas game for the black and gold since it played the Minnesota Vikings in London in 2013. In addition, this is the first-ever NFL regular season game to be played in Ireland. Irish media RTE reported that state funding for the game is still in the works between the NFL and Ireland's Department of Arts, Tourism, Media and Sport. The Steelers have a long history with Ireland. The team played an exhibition game there in 1997 at Croke Park against the Chicago Bears. Also, the late Steelers president Dan Rooney served as ambassador to Ireland under the Obama Administration. The Rooneys are of Irish descent. The Steelers also have a dedicated Steelers in Ireland webpage. 'We are very excited to be the designated team in the first regular season game to be played in Ireland this upcoming season,' said Steelers' President Art Rooney II. 'The opportunity for the Pittsburgh Steelers to play in Ireland is truly special, not only because of the Rooney family history there, but also to play in front of the growing number of Steelers fans in Ireland. We are thrilled to be part of this historic event to represent Pittsburgh in a game that brings the NFL to the great sports fans in Ireland. The game is part of the NFL's plan to expand international games. It's part of a rule stating a team has to give up a home game once every eight years. Steelers to host international game in Dublin, marking first NFL game in Ireland

The NFL's international presence keeps growing, with the league announcing a game in Ireland next season. The Pittsburgh Steelers will be the designated team for the matchup, which will take place in Dublin's Croke Park. Ar Aghaidh Linn 🇮🇪☘️The NFL is coming to Dublin, Ireland and the @steelers are the designated team! — NFL UK & Ireland (@NFLUKIRE) February 7, 2025 The game will mark the NFL's first appearance in the country. In recent years, Ireland has hosted a number of college football matchups as part of the College Football Classic. Kansas State and Iowa State are set to kick off the 2025 season in Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Additional details, such as when the game will take place and who the Steelers will play, will be announced later. The NFL has played several games in nearby London, with three more planned for next season. The league has also announced two other international games, both firsts for the NFL: The Miami Dolphins are headed to Madrid, while the Los Angeles Rams will play in Melbourne, Australia. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has ramped up the league's international games in recent years, saying in November that he was aiming for eight international games in the 2025 season. The Dublin game makes six officially announced so far; a game in Berlin, Germany is also expected to be announced. The NFL has also hosted games in Mexico City in the past. The league traveled to Brazil for the first time last season, kicking off the 2024 season with a game in São Paulo.
