BHUBANESWAR : A low pressure area is likely to form over west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around Tuesday and is expected to trigger heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha this week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. The national weather forecaster has predicted heavy rainfall in some places of the state between Tuesday and Saturday. Heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Koraput districts on Tuesday and Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts on Wednesday. Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre Manorama Mohanty said, 'Some parts of Odisha will receive heavy rainfall from Tuesday onwards under the influence of the low pressure area. We are closely monitoring the weather system.' The regional met office has forecast light to moderate rainfall and thundershower activity in many parts of the state between Monday and Friday. Squally weather with wind speeds exceeding 45 kmph may prevail along and off Odisha coast on Thursday and Friday and sea condition is likely to remain moderate to rough during this period, it said. In view of the situation, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea from Wednesday and along and off Odisha coast from Thursday. Meanwhile, some places in the state witnessed rainfall activity on Sunday under the influence of the upper air trough running from east-central Arabian sea to north Odisha. Paradip received 35.4 mm rainfall and Rayagada 31 mm between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on the day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued orange alert for heavy rains in Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal. A yellow alert is in place in Tamil Nadu and Delhi. Pre-monsoon showers and strong winds brought life to a standstill in Delhi on Wednesday, days after severe waterlogging was reported in Bengaluru and Mumbai after heavy rain. The Bengaluru Regional Meteorological centre has warned against heavy rain, thunderstorm, lightening and strong winds today at Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts. Furthermore, moderate downpours are likely in Bellari, Bengaluru, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Hassan, Kodagu, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Tumakuru and Vijayanagara districts. The Mumbai Regional Meteorological Center noted that cyclonic circulation over Arabian sea is expected to bring rainfall, thunderstorm and gusty winds until May 24. IMD official Shubhangi Bhute informed that rainfall activity over Maharashtra, including south Konkan, south central Maharashtra and Mumbai, may increase over the next few days under the influence of the cyclonic circulation. "There is a possibility of heavy rainfall with thunder at some places, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph or possibly higher at isolated locations," PTI quoted Shubhangi Bhute as saying. The Kolkata Regional Meteorological Center issed an orange alert, warning against heavy rainfall, thunderstrom, lightening and strong winds on May 22 in Jhargham, West Midnapur, North and South 24 Parganas and Nadia districts of South Bengal. The Regional Meteorological Department of Delhi has issued a yellow alert for today and tomorrow, a day after sudden thunderstorm and heavy rains wreaked havoc across Delhi-NCR. The weather is expected to be partly cloudy sky and hot and humid weather conditions will prevail on May 22. IMD Scientist Naresh Kumar on Wednesday said, 'Throughout this month, Western Disturbances brought light rainfall and thunderstorms to parts of Northwest India, keeping temperatures lower. But in recent days, with clear skies and no disturbances, temperatures have gradually risen.' Currently, IMD's heatwave warnings are in place for Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, North Madhya Pradesh and South Uttar Pradesh. Red alert has been issued for Rajasthan, where temperatures could reach up to 47°C in the coming days, the IMD scientist said. "The southwest monsoon is now expected to hit Kerala within 3–4 days and is likely to move further into parts of Bengal and the Northeast shortly after," ANI quoted Naresh Kumar as saying. IMD warned against heavy to very heavy rain in Sikkim in the wake of cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. The weather agency suggested that is a risk of floods, landslides and travel disruption on May 22.

In the weather outlook it was stated that a gradual rise in temperature by 3 degrees to 4 degrees would come about in the coming four days.

Rain coupled with thunderstorms is likely to continue over northwest and central India for next five days with maximum intensity including hailstorms and gusty winds on May 8, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning is likely over northeast India till May 11. (HT photo) Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places over east Rajasthan and Uttarakhand on Thursday. Heavy rainfall along with thunderstorm, lightning and squally winds are likely to continue over Gujarat state on Thursday with a possibility of isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Saurashtra and Kutch. Heavy rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning is likely over northeast India till May 11. Unusual weather marked by gusty winds and overcast skies had started around May 1 and has been continuing since then over NW India and other parts of the country. 'This weather is very unusual in May. Thunderstorm activity will continue over NW India for next 3-4 days, but some models are also showing that thunderstorm, gusty winds will continue till May 13-14 marked by easterly winds, western disturbance and cyclonic circulation over the northern plains. Western Disturbance (WDs) are impacting frequently, and they are traveling slightly south of their normal position leading to impacgt on the plains,' said Mahesh Palawat, vice president, climate and meteorology, Skymet Weather. Southwest monsoon is very likely to advance into South Andaman Sea, some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal and Nicobar Islands around May 13, IMD has forecast. The normal date for monsoon advancement over the South Andaman Sea is May 22. 'Monsoon advancement over South Andaman Sea is expected a week earlier than normal. But we cannot say if monsoon arrival over Kerala will also be early,' said Palawat. Normally, monsoon arrives over Kerala on June 1. A western disturbance as a cyclonic circulation is lying over West Madhya Pradesh in lower to upper tropospheric levels. An upper air cyclonic circulation is lying over northwest Madhya Pradesh in lower tropospheric levels. An east-west trough is running from southwest Rajasthan to north Jharkhand in lower tropospheric levels. A trough is running from northeast Arabian sea to cyclonic circulation over West Madhya Pradesh in lower & middle tropospheric levels. Under the influence of these systems, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds speed reaching 40-60 kmph likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, heat wave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on May 10 and 11; Gangetic West Bengal till May 13; Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand till May 13. Hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over Odisha on May 8; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe on May 8.
