THRC seeks report on B'deshi undertrial's death at Agartala centre

Tripura Human Rights Commission
(THRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the death of a Bangladeshi undertrial who died during treatment at the
ABV Regional Cancer Centre
in Agartala on Saturday.
The commission has directed the inspector general of prisons to submit a comprehensive report by June 18 on the circumstances leading to the prisoner's death. The undertrial prisoner,
Aradhan Sarkar
(42), a resident of Habiganj in Bangladesh's Sylhet district, had been in custody for illegal entry into India during the second week of April.
Initially, he was lodged at Khowai sub-jail following the court order. Thereafter, on April 17, he was shifted to Kendriya Sansodhanagar, Bishalgarh, following a judicial order recommending better medical care at the Agartala Government Medical College.
Sarkar was taken to the medical college hospital on April 19, and he was later referred to the ABV Regional Cancer Centre after he was diagnosed with cancer. Sarkar died during treatment in the early hours.
The jail authorities have informed the officer-in-charge of Champahaur Police Station in Khowai district to notify Sarkar's family members and request them to collect the body after completing formalities.
However, THRC emphasised the importance of determining the exact cause and circumstances of the death. It has instructed inspector general of prisons to submit a detailed report, including initial health screening records during custody.
The commission has also asked for a complete medical treatment history, including indoor care, inquest and post-mortem reports, videography of the post-mortem, chemical analysis of viscera, final scientific cause of death and detailed magisterial inquiry report.
