Jersey businesses frustrated by higher than expected freight cost rises as some warn of price hikes

A major Jersey restaurant chain says it may have to charge customers more due to an unexpected rise in the cost of freight. Flo Aranda, Randalls' sales manager, explains that while the company is reluctant to hike prices on its menus, it may be forced to after being told by Ferryspeed to expect higher bills on imported goods into the island from later this year. Mr Aranda says it is not yet clear how much the freight costs will increase but that a rise of 10% or more would likely result in higher prices for customers. He adds: "What we want to achieve is keeping prices the same because I know that going out is expensive at the moment and we don't want to put any more pressure on people. "Just when you think you're out of the woods, something else comes up and something else comes up and something else comes up. "It feels like it's completely impossible to win." The news comes after Danish firm DFDS replaced Condor as the island's ferry operator at the end of March. DFDS charges a flat rate for freight compared to Condor's previous dynamic pricing model, with Jersey's Sustainable Economic Development Minister telling a scrutiny panel shortly before the takeover that there would be "no significant" rise in unit prices for retailers or consumers. In that hearing, Deputy Kirsten Morel and economy chief Richard Corrigan said they were estimating that consumers would pay 0.4% more for goods with the new flat rate. However, several retailers have confirmed to ITV News that Ferryspeed - the main transporters of freight for Jersey businesses - has told them to expect significant price rises. Pastella Ceramics expect a 7% increase, with another wholesaler told to brace for a double digit rise in freight costs. Ferryspeed declined ITV News's request for an interview but in a statement, the company said: "The global logistics industry is volume-based with low margins. "The greater the volumes of freight handled, the greater the opportunities to create efficiencies and pass the benefits of volume-based pricing on to the customer. "Brittany Ferries have also updated their Guernsey rates since the advent of the new single island contract. This means that our ferry operating costs have risen. "We have worked closely with our customers to try to mitigate and absorb these increases, where possible. "However, combined with above inflation increases on harbour dues and the increased cost of operations with two ferry providers, price adjustments are unfortunately unavoidable. "We have been paying the new rates since the ferry services launched and have protected our customers from the necessary adjustments while the impact was fully understood. "We recognise the importance of our role in ensuring that Channel Islands' economies grow by allowing businesses to import and export and enabling efficient supply chains." Responding to criticism from some businesses, Deputy Morel said: "I'm not here to be scapegoated. What I have done is brought transparency to ferry pricing. We now know how much it costs to bring goods to Jersey. "The intermediaries, the companies that take those goods off the ferry and distribute it around the island, there's no control on those prices. "That's very separate from the cost of the ferry and so I would like to have better sight of that and maybe we need to look at that."

Tampa Bay Rays Breakout Star Turning Heads

While the Tampa Bay Rays have been trying to figure out how to pile up more victories in the American League this season, they've been watching Jonathan Aranda mash at the plate. Aranda has been a pleasant surprise for manager Kevin Cash and his Rays teammates. But Aranda had to deal with injuries last season, cutting into his prospective playing time at first base. This season, though, appears to be taking a different course for him. He's making the most of it, becoming the Rays' full-time starting first baseman. What about his statistics? He's been nothing short of spectacular. Through Friday night's action, Aranda is hitting .315 with six home runs and 20 RBIs. He's got an OPS of .927 and a .523 slugging percentage. Those numbers are far and away better than his career numbers. Advertisement Let's look at some granular numbers from Aranda's season, this time up until Thursday's games. Aranda was a pure boss when it comes to breaking balls, slugging .690 against them. He's been waiting on the pitch, not flailing away at the plate. What about off-speed pitches? Aranda was mashing at a .269 clip with a .462 slugging percentage. Jonathan Aranda is filled with lots of confidence early this season for Tampa Bay 'I'm feeling good right now. Feeling a lot of confidence,' Aranda said through interpreter Eddie Rodriguez, reported. 'I'm just looking for that pitch that I can drive, and that's what I've been doing.' Cash knows that he's got a diamond in the rough, so to speak, with Aranda on his team. He's not complaining one bit. Advertisement 'He's really balanced. And I think even when he gets off balance, or the timing gets messed up, he keeps his hands and the barrel in the zone a long time where he can get out on his front foot and just push a ball the other way,' Cash said. 'We saw him do that a handful of times on the [last] homestand. That's a sign just of a really good hitter that's seeing the ball well.' Don't be surprised if Aranda ends up getting a spot on the AL All-Star Team when the summertime classic takes place.

After finally finding a home, Season for Caring recipient Olga Aranda Guzmán dies

For more than a dozen years, Olga Aranda Guzmán slowly declined from kidney and heart failure. On Monday, Aranda passed away. She was 63. Two years ago, Aranda and her daughter Ana Laura Martínez Aranda left Nuevo Laredo and sought asylum in Texas, making their way to Austin. By then Aranda was confined to a hospital bed and moved between family members' and friends' apartments. At one point, she and Martínez slept in their car. Then, in September, Aranda and Martínez were chosen for the American-Statesman's Season for Caring program after being nominated by Hospice Austin. Since 1999, Season for Caring has raised more than $21.7 million for local nonprofits. "I really think it was God's gift," Martínez said of Season for Caring and Hospice Austin For the next seven months, Season for Caring grants and donations helped the family move into a home, repair their car and furnish their new place. For the first time, Aranda was able to leave the hospital bed and sit in a recliner in the living room. Martínez could focus on carrying for her mother and not worry about rent or paying for groceries. "I thank God," she said. On Monday, Aranda passed away and was celebrated by her daughter, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. "She was not perfect," Martínez said. "Nobody is perfect, but she was a good mother. She was lovely." Martínez remembers her mother would teach her a lot of things, including how to cook. "Maybe I am like her," Martínez said. Her mother's passing, she said, means Aranda is no longer in terrible pain. "She was suffering," Martínez said. "I miss her a lot, but I know she's in a better place. ... She's getting rest. She's getting happy." Jonathan Aranda Continues Strong Offensive Showing for Tampa Bay Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays were one win away from a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers in the series immediately following being swept by the Philadelphia Phillies. The Rays did take two of three, however, winning the first two contests before dropping the series finale on Mother's Day. Advertisement Despite the loss, the Rays still hit well, they just were not able to string enough together and push runs across. One batter who continued his strong start to the year is Jonathan Aranda. The 2025 season has been a breakout one for Aranda, his first as a full-time starter. Through his first 35 games, the first baseman has batted .342/.429/.553 with five home runs, 18 RBI and a 180 OPS+. Entering this year, Aranda's career-high for games played was 44, a mark he set in 2024. He is currently on pace to shatter that this year, and has already set new career-best marks in hits (39), doubles (nine), RBI (18) and total bases (63). Advertisement It has been a stark contrast to the rest of his career. Entering 2025, the first baseman carried a career line of only .222/.309/.382 with 10 home runs, 33 RBI and a 97 OPS+ across 333 plate appearances in 110 games. It is amazing what regular playing time can do for a player. It has been a fantastic campaign so far for Aranda, a certified breakout. After Sunday's 3-for-4 performance against the Brewers, he does not look to be slowing down anytime soon.
