Celebrating beauty during Forever 605 Day

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It's June 5th, but some South Dakotans may know it as Forever 605 Day. It's a time set aside to take in the beauty and amenities across the state. Margaret Rush of Sioux Falls spent this 605 day taking in the rushing waterfalls at Falls Park. Lincoln County's 2026 budget sees $500K cut forecast 'Family is visiting here, so we made a big to do to come out here and enjoy Falls Park,' Rush said. 605 is the area code across the state, which gives people a reason to come together. 'It's just a day for all of us to say, 'Hey, we have all of this. We are one,' and that's what 605 Day is,' Experience Sioux Falls CEO Teri Schmidt said. Schmidt says it's a time to build community pride. 'There's a lot of great passion and support for our community in so many ways. This is just another day to say, 'Hey, we got it going on in Sioux Falls. This is a great place to be,'' Schmidt said. Schmidt says tourism is starting to see a slight increase, so whether you visit Falls Park, the Arc of Dreams, local wildlife or downtown, it's as good of a time as any to enjoy what Sioux Falls has to offer. 'To us it's about hey, let's get out and celebrate Sioux Falls. Enjoy the art, the recreation, the parks, Falls Park, go shopping, go eating someplace, your favorite diner,' Schmidt said. And as Rush takes in the beautiful views of Falls Park, she'll make sure she enjoys the nice weather while she still can. 'Winter will be here before you know it,' Rush said. Sioux Falls Arts Commission brings beauty to the city

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — From the Arc of Dreams to the Sculpturewalk… to your neighborhood, the Sioux Falls Arts Commission wants to bring art throughout the city. The group is working with neighborhood associations and a city grant program to place art throughout Sioux Falls. Federal cuts endanger South Dakota food distribution Studies show the benefits go beyond what you see. 'Arts directly contribute to our health and well-being, and even our longevity. They help build and attract a workforce to Sioux Falls and talent. They help retain talent and bring kids back to our home community. And ultimately, they bring us together and define who we are. So, we're excited about this work, but we know that these benefits only happen when the full community is involved,' said Ivy Oland Dandar from the City Arts Commission during a city One Sioux Falls media briefing on Wednesday. In addition to all of the new artwork downtown, this summer you'll also see new art pieces located at Oakview Branch Library, Perch Neighborhood Kitchen, and the Ronning Branch Library. Sioux Falls march attracts hundreds

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — You may have noticed more protests being organized lately in KELOLAND. Thursday evening a crowd of several hundred people made their way from the Federal Courthouse to in downtown Sioux Falls to the Arc of Dreams. The March was organized by a group called Indivisible 605. They want to being attention to people who are being deported from the US without due process. This was one of several rallies organized to protest actions by the Trump administration. Marlon Mollet has attended several protests and says speaking up is important. Vote for South Dakota's best beef burger 'By standing up for our rights and for people and veterans, for workers for health care workers people who work for the VA, I think we make a noise to let our politicians know, hey we are concerned. said Mollet. 'And we want to make sure our benefits are protected, Medicare and Social Security. And if we don't have a voice, they could take it away, I don't know, hopefully they wouldn't but I think we need to let those people know that we are concerned about our benefits.' Tom: Why do this? 'I think if we don't do it, its basically telling them to go ahead and do what they want,' said Mollet. Like Mollet, Gaylord Helmbrecht served in the military. He is concerned about DOGE cuts to the VA system. 'I hate to see too many workers get let go they are looking at possible letting 80 thousand workers go throughout the VA system and we don't know how that is going to affect our health care. Helmbrecht says letting our elected officials know how we feel is important too. Sandra Callies is also active in the recent protest movement. She is an advocate for women's rights. She wants people to know that they can make a difference. 'More people interested in saying I don't like this I don't like what is happening right now, when wee were out in downtown Sioux Falls on April 5th, that was the most people I've seen in Sioux Falls or South Dakota since forever, said Callies. 'And so it means there is something wrong, one and two what are we going to do about it?' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
