Cubs-Cardinals Trade Idea Sends $275 Million Slugger to Chicago
The Chicago Cubs started the season with Matt Shaw at third base, but the top prospect was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after hitting .172 with a .535 OPS in his first 18 Major League Baseball games. Since then, multiple infielders have taken their turn at third, with Jon Berti, Vidal Brujan, Justin Turner, Gage Workman, and Nicky Lopez all receiving an opportunity. Advertisement Despite the Cubs' offense being just one run behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (257) for most runs scored in the league, there's potential for the front office to look for an offensive upgrade at the hot corner while Shaw improves his game in the minors. Garret Kerman of Clutch Points believes the Cubs' options for players they could target in a trade may be limited. One candidate Kerman does not rule out is St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. "For the Cubs, the fit is obvious. Their infield defense and offensive production at third base have lagged behind the rest of the roster, and adding Arenado would instantly transform a weakness into a strength," Kerman wrote about how a Cubs trade for Arenado could benefit the team. "Pairing Arenado with Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner would give Chicago arguably the best defensive infield in baseball, while his bat would lengthen a lineup already featuring Kyle Tucker and Seiya Suzuki." St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado (28) fields a ground ball against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the sixth inning at Busch Curry-Imagn Images In the trade idea, the Cardinals receive three prospects: Second baseman James Triantos, right-handed pitcher Cade Horton, and right fielder Kevin Alcantara. The package of players the Cubs trade in this hypothetical deal is steep, but that may be the price point to acquire a future Hall of Fame player like Arenado. Advertisement "For the Cardinals, the return is exactly what they need. Triantos can step in as the third baseman of the future, Horton gives them a potential frontline starter, and Alcántara brings star potential to the outfield," wrote Kerman. "The salary relief allows St. Louis to reallocate resources and address other areas of need, all while restocking a system that's been thinned by years of contention." A trade between the NL Central division rivals is rare, but the Cubs may become desperate to improve at third base. Related: Cubs Outfielder Putting up Historic Team Numbers

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Nolan Arenado hit a bases-loaded triple in St. Louis' four-run sixth inning, Miles Mikolas pitched six strong innings and the Cardinals held on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 on Friday night. Ryan Helsley gave up a leadoff single to Randal Grichuk and allowed a two-run homer to pinch-hitter Gabriel Moreno with two outs before getting Corbin Carroll to pop out to Arenado at third base to seal the win and his 10th save. St. Louis has won 14 of its last 18 while outscoring opponents 88-45 in that stretch. Mikolas (4-2) allowed one run and four hits, struck out four and walked one. Ketel Marte led off the fourth with a home run to center field off Mikolas to give Arizona a 1-0 lead. With the Cardinals trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Iván Herrera drew a bases-loaded walk from Zac Gallen (3-6) on a 3-2 knuckle curve with one out for the first run. Arenado hit a two-out triple that center fielder Alek Thomas dived to catch near the wall, but it struck his arm and rolled along the warning track. Arenado slid safely into third. It was the first triple for Arenado since hitting one at home against Cincinnati on June 11, 2023. Gallen allowed four run and just three hits, but walked four in 5 2/3 innings. St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol was ejected in the bottom of the fourth with one out and one on by home plate umpire Ron Kulpa. Key moment With two on and two outs in the sixth, Eugenio Suárez smacked a liner that shortstop Masyn Winn leaped to catch to end the inning and Arizona was unable to extend its 1-0 lead. Key stat St. Louis has won each of his Mikolas' last five outings dating to April 30 at Cincinnati. Cardinals' Arenado Asks to be Moved Down in Lineup
Having won 12 of their last 14 games, the Cardinals are one of the hottest teams in baseball. While just about everything seems to be going right for the Redbirds, it's been a rough last week or so for eight-time All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado. In his last seven games, Arenado is slashing just .172/.194/.310. He's now hitting .247 on the year, with four homers and 18 RBIs. Advertisement Arenado has been the cleanup hitter for the Cardinals in every game he's played in this season, but that won't be the case for tonight's game against the Tigers. Amid his struggles at the plate and with other guys in the order being red-hot while hitting behind him, Arenado went to manager Oli Marmol, asking to be moved down in the order. Cardinals third baseman Nolan ArenadoPeter Aiken-Imagn Images "Guys are playing well in front of me, or that were hitting behind me, and they should move up in front of me," Arenado said about the lineup change. "It was really nothing more than that. I don't think it's pressure. It's just performance." The guys Arenado is referring to are Willson Contreras and Iván Herrera. Contreras, who is slashing .315/.397/.556 with three homers in his last 15 games, will now assume the role of cleanup hitter. Herrera will move up to the the five-spot, while Arenado will drop to sixth. Advertisement Herrera hasn't missed a beat since returning from the IL. He's slashing an incredible .500/.571/.750 in his last seven games. The Cardinals' offense will look to get things going again after scoring just one run in each of the final two games against the Royals. The Cardinals begin a three-game series with the Tigers tonight in St. Louis. Related: Cardinals Lead MLB in Ever Important Category Related: Cardinals vs Tigers: How to Watch and What to Watch for

MLB rumors: Insider reveals trade market for St. Louis Cardinals' Nolan Arenado
St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado blocked trades this offseason to the Los Angeles Angels and the Houston Astros. Months later, St. Louis is reportedly still pushing to move off the veteran slugger. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Cardinals have continued to shop Arenado around the league during the regular season, but they are 'not receiving any interest' from teams in him. He's raised his OBP nearly 50 points and improved his slugging percentage, resulting in a near 60-point jump in his OPS. As for his work defensively, he ranks in the 92nd percentile for Baseball Savant's Fielding Run Value and is in the 95th percentile for Outs Above Average (5) this season. Love BASEBALL? After Arenado used his no-trade clause to block deals with the Angels and Astros, St. Louis hoped to make a trade with the Boston Red Sox this offseason. However, Boston signed Alex Bregman, forcing St. Louis to keep Arenado as it had no other options. That sentiment seems to be held by the rest of the league right now. The Cardinals began shopping Arenado in November and he remains on the roster more than five months later. If St. Louis wants to move off him, it will evidently have to cover a significant portion of his contract and even that might not be enough to receive a quality return in a deal.
