MercadoLibre to replace founder Galperin as CEO, taps Szarfsztejn for the role
SAO PAULO, May 21 (Reuters) - Latin American e-commerce giant MercadoLibre (MELI.O), opens new tab announced on Wednesday that Chief Executive and co-founder Marcos Galperin will be replaced by current commerce head Ariel Szarfsztejn as of 2026. Galperin will move "to a more strategic role within the company, as executive chairman of the board," MercadoLibre said in a securities filing. Galperin, now a billionaire and one of the region's most influential entrepreneurs, co-founded MercadoLibre 26 years ago, building it into Latin America's most valuable firm by market cap. Szarfsztejn joined MercadoLibre in 2017 and held several positions before assuming the commerce leadership role in 2023.

MercadoLibre CEO Steps Aside After 25 Years to Be Chairman
MercadoLibre Chief Executive Officer Marcos Galperin will become executive chairman of the e-commerce and financial technology giant, marking the first change in the top job since he founded Latin America's most valuable company more than two decades ago. Ariel Szarfsztejn, who has been an executive at the company since 2017, will become MercadoLibre's new CEO as of Jan. 1, 2026, according to a company filing Wednesday. The 43-year-old is currently the company's commerce president.
