Meet the 14-year-old Wicklow entrepreneur with his own baking business
Wicklow People Blessed with entrepreneurial drive, a strong work ethic and a canny knack for making TikTok recipes his own, Arklow student Bobby Sherwood is a baker on the rise. Fresh off a TV appearance in the final of a national baking competition and with his bespoke cake business booming, the plucky 14-year-old is out to cultivate a cupcake empire and show his community that 'Bobby Bakes It Better'. After being bitten by the baking bug while helping his aunt in her kitchen, Arklow CBS pupil Bobby has embarked on a culinary journey, spending long hours experimenting with ingredients, before finding his speciality, cupcakes, and measuring, whipping, and frosting up a storm.

Wicklow teen's Oreo and Biscoff cupcakes win him national baking award
This year's competition received entries from across the country, with categories ranging from scones and muffins to cupcakes, breads, tarts, and traybakes. Bobby Sherwood (14), who attends Arklow CBS, took part in a live bake-off event at Airfield Estate in Dundrum, Co Dublin, where he faced competition from Elena Clarke, with her traditional brown bread and Leah Mallinson, who impressed the judges with her vanilla cupcakes topped with white chocolate, Swiss meringue, buttercream and fondant decorations, earning her the Junior Baker of the Year title and €1,500. For his efforts in finishing as runner-up, Bobby receives a €500 prize, with the winners announced on Ireland AM. Gary Desmond, CEO of Gala Retail, commented: 'Gala stores are at the heart of communities across Ireland, and this competition has highlighted the incredible baking talent within those communities. 'From traditional family recipes passed down through generations to creative twists on classic bakes, the standard was exceptional. 'Congratulations to Bobby and all those who took part. Their dedication, creativity, and love for baking captured what this competition was all about.'
