Chaos at London Marathon as protesters deface Tower Bridge with red paint

Youth Demand demonstrators have thrown red powder paint on Tower Bridge during the London Marathon. The group, which is calling for a trade embargo on Israel, said two of its supporters jumped over the barriers and threw the substance in front of the men's elite race at around 10.35am. An image shared by Youth Demand shows two people standing in the middle of the road wearing t-shirts that said 'Youth Demand: Stop Arming Israel'. It added: 'City of London police quickly moved to arrest the pair.' RACE AGAINST TIME TO SAVE GAZA: YOUTH DEMAND SUPPORTERS DISRUPT LONDON MARATHONAt 10:30am, Willow and Cristy jumped the barriers at Tower Bridge and sat down in front of the men's elite race at the London Marathon, wearing 'Stop Arming Israel' is running out of… — Youth Demand (@youth_demand) April 27, 2025 Youth Demand named the two activists as Willow Holland, 18, from Bristol, and Cristy North, a live-in carer from Nottingham. Miss Holland was quoted by the group as saying: 'I am taking action with Youth Demand because I have run out of other options: thousands are being killed in Gaza, our Government is making no effort to stop it and no other course of action, marches or rallies, has worked. I refuse to be complicit in a genocide funded by our politicians.' Ms North was quoted as saying: 'I'm taking action today at the London marathon because the people in Palestine are running out of time. We have tried all other avenues to get the Government to stop arming Israel and yet our Government is still enabling a genocide. They are making the UK people complicit in breaking UK domestic law by using our taxes to arm a genocidal state, breaking humanitarian international law.' The BBC TV feed cut to the elite men's race moments after the leaders had crossed Tower Bridge and there appeared to be no impact on the race.

Multiple Metropolitan Police officers jumped in to restrain the duo, who were wearing shirts with the words "Stop Arming Israel". Youth Demand is a branch of Just Stop Oil, who have vowed to wreak havoc during events in London this summer. The group is made up of Just Stop Oil alumni, students and Gen Z activists. The dramatic display came after runners set off on the 45th TCS London Marathon. Celebrities, MPs and the fathers of two girls killed in the Southport attack are all taking part. More than 56,000 participants are expected on the 26.2-mile course through the capital today, as temperatures climb to 22C. With the elite wheelchair, men's and women's race well under way, the participants in the mass race have also set off. Thousands of supporters with banners have lined the streets of the capital to cheer on the runners and wave to their loved ones. Among the participants are David Stancombe and Sergio Aguiar, whose daughters Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, were murdered in the Southport mass stabbing last summer. Dads of Southport victims run London Marathon They are raising money for projects in memory of their daughters and Bebe King, six, who was also killed at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in July. In a video message posted on X, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer wished the pair "the very best of luck". He added: "This is an incredible way to honour the memory of your precious daughters and the entire nation is in awe of your courage and your resilience. "We'll all be with you, every single step of the way." In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Mr Stancombe said: "Even now it still blows me away that so many people know about it and you're getting messages from the Prime Minister. "I would love people to know I've seen their message, but I have genuinely read so many of them. It's amazing." The youngest participant is Lucy Jones, who turned 18 on Sunday, while the oldest runners are Mohan Kudchadker, 84, and Mary Jo Brinkman, 83 - both of whom are travelled from the US for the event. Pro-Palestinian protesters pelted with eggs while blocking traffic

Pro-Palestinian protesters were pelted with eggs as they blocked traffic in central London. Youth Demand activists with orange flares and banners reading 'Free Palestine' and 'Stop Arming Israel' took to the streets in the Moorgate district, Farringdon Road and Fenchurch Street. Passers-by threw a 'shower of eggs' at the crowd of activists in Farringdon Road and a truck attempted to drive through them, according to Youth Demand, which organised the protest. The group blocked each street for about 20 minutes on Friday morning. The Metropolitan Police has been contacted for comment but Youth Demand claimed that none of its activists had been arrested. The protest comes just days after David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, was targeted by Youth Demand protesters at his home in north London. Two female activists laid child-sized body bags at David Lammy's doorstep and displayed a sign over his hedge which read 'Lammy Stop Arming Genocide' on Tuesday morning. Youth Demand, a new organisation consisting of different pro-Palestinian and environmentalist groups, has ramped up protests as it fills the void left by Just Stop Oil, which is disbanding at the end of this month. The group has been dubbed 'Just Stop Oil 2.0'. It claims the UK government is complicit in 'genocide' over the conflict in Gaza and also calls for 'the super rich and fossil fuel elite' to pay damages to the communities and countries harmed by fossil fuel burning. Mia Hinds, 18, from Exeter, who took part in Friday's protest, said: 'I am taking action with Youth Demand because I cannot sit by and watch two genocides happen on livestream: the genocide of the Palestinians, and the global genocide of the climate crisis. 'As a young person, I feel so much rage about government complicity and I feel a duty to take to the streets.' The Government's current position is that Israel's actions in Gaza are at a clear risk of breaching international humanitarian law.
