The clan with no tartan
From The Times, May 6, 1925The Society of Yorkshiremen in London gave a luncheon at the Hotel Victoria, Northumberland-avenue, yesterday in honour of their new president, Lord Ronaldshay. Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Arthur Leetham, chairman of the society, presided.
Lord Ronaldshay said the existence of a society like theirs bore witness to the strength of a characteristic which was deeply rooted in human nature, a characteristic which was best described by the word 'clannish'.
More than 400 years ago a Venetian traveller made these comments on the British people: 'The English are great lovers of themselves and anything that is theirs.
