Veterans group raises awareness about suicide, mental health
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Veteran suicide has been a long-standing problem for years.
Members of American Veterans, a veterans group from California, are conducting an eight-city 'journey' to raise awareness and responsiveness about suicide awareness and prevention.
Saturday, May 10, AMVETS held an event at Ascarate Lake in El Paso as part of that outreach tour.
About 30 vendors took part in the event, spreading information about services that can help veterans.
'Most of us know someone who has been impacted by the thoughts or act of suicide. The national statistics says nearly 22 or more Veterans commit suicide on a daily basis. This tour's advocacy is to raise awareness and provide resources available throughout the country, so that no Veteran needs to feel alone or not be able to talk this out with someone,' a news release from the group said.
The group will make stops in Tucson on Sunday, May 11 and in Glendale, Arizona on Monday, May 12.
