Ram-raiders dump Porsche used to smash shop

A luxury car was used to smash into a shop in a ram-raid and then abandoned at the scene by a group of men wearing balaclavas. Police were called to reports of a group of men trying to force entry at an Asda Express petrol station off the A371 in Locking, near Weston-super-Mare, at 03:44 BST. Officers arrived five minutes later and found the group had fled from the area after damaging the building. A black Porsche Cayenne and a grey Ford S-Max were found at the scene. The men, wearing black clothing and balaclavas, are believed to have left in a blue Audi Q5, Avon and Somerset Police said. Officers carried out a search of the area, supported by a specialist dog team, but no-one was located. "An investigation is under way and CCTV has been reviewed as part of this work," a police spokesperson said. "A cordon is in place to allow crime scene investigators to examine the area." Armed petrol station robber jailed for six years

A man who robbed two North Yorkshire petrol stations at knifepoint has been jailed for six years. Roy Holmes, 58, of Parkside Road, Bradford, waved a lock knife at staff at filling stations in Knaresborough and Harrogate in 2024 before stealing tobacco and cash. The first robbery was at Asda Express on Wetherby Road, Knaresborough, in June, followed by Esso Woodlands on Wetherby Road, Harrogate, a few weeks later. Holmes, who was also linked to a robbery at a Co-op store in Cullingworth, West Yorkshire, admitted three counts of robbery and was jailed at York Crown Court. Police had appealed to the public for information after he was pictured on CCTV at the first robbery in Knaresborough, where he told staff to lie on the floor. At the robbery in Harrogate, Holmes put fuel in a car displaying false number plates before threatening staff with a knife and filling a bag with cigarettes. The car was stopped by North Yorkshire Police officers who had traced it to the outskirts of Bradford, with the stolen items found inside. He was later linked to the robbery in Cullingworth, near Keighley, in September. Police investigator David Carter said Holmes "showed no accountability and no remorse to his victims". "While crimes like this are thankfully rare in North Yorkshire, they are very frightening for victims so I'm glad justice has been served and Holmes is behind bars," he said. Representatives of the firm said the Asda Express petrol station at Haddington retail park, was one of around 350 taken over by the company as part of a £2.3billion acquisition from Euro Garages. And they said there were plans to create 'full convenience stores' on the sites. Asda Express at Haddington Retail Park | Google Maps A spokesperson for Asda told the meeting: 'The Express forecourt strategy is a brand new strand to the Asda business and what it is seeking to do is provide a value led convenience offer across the estate, some 350 petrol filling stations will become Asdas in due course.' He said Asda planned to replace what had in the past been a focus on tobacco, confectionery and car products in the forecourts with a 'full convenience store' including 'fresh, frozen, larder and household products with where space permits food to go'. He added: 'What they are seeking to do is have a small alcohol offer to complement the grocery offer.' The board accepted that in this case the Haddington garage was not an excluded premises and was a convenience store which would be allowed to sell alcohol. Councillor John McMillan, acting board chairperson, described Asda's management of the store as a 'safe pair of hands'. He said: 'I think the very fact this is a convenience store means there is no reason to refuse (the licence). The board unanimously granted the licence.

The company behind the Asda Express store in the petrol station at Haddington Retail Park, aims to argue it is seen as a 'principal source' for groceries or fuel by a significant number of people in the area. However a customer survey carried out in November last year reported that while 12.9 per cent agreed they would be disadvantaged or inconvenienced if they could not buy fuel from the service station, the proportion who said they would miss out on groceries was zero per cent. Asda Express is based in Haddington Retail Park, Haddington | Google Maps Petrol stations are generally considered 'excluded premises'; which cannot sell alcohol unless it is proven customers would be disadvantaged by losing access to groceries or fuel at it. Haddington Retail Park, which opened at the Gateside entrance to the town four years ago, has a Food Warehouse, Home Bargains and Aldi supermarket alongside the petrol station and a Costa drive thru. More than 800 customers were questioned during the survey with around 171 described as the 'population of interest' who lived locally and used the garage. Four out of five of them added that the purchase would be in addition to what they would normally buy at other shops rather than replacing a store purchase. The application for a licence to sell alcohol from the garage will be heard by the licensing board on Thursday.

Asda plans to open 25 new Asda Express stores between June and December 2025 The move is part of a wider business revamp under returning chairman Allan Leighton The retailer is likely to target town centres and high-footfall urban areas. Many new sites are expected to be converted from Co-op and EG Group locations Asda has not yet revealed where the new stores will open A major UK supermarket is gearing up to significantly expand its network of convenience stores this year. Asda has revealed plans to open 25 new locations between June and December, as the retailer hopes to grow the presence of its smaller Asda Express store format in town and city centres. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Last year, Asda scaled back its convenience store rollout to prioritise making stores cleaner and improving product availability on shelves, opening just 12 locations, according to The Telegraph. The renewed push comes as part of a wider turnaround strategy under executive chairman Allan Leighton, who re-joined the company in November. Where will the new Asda Express stores be? While specific locations for the 25 new Asda Express stores have not been officially confirmed, we can speculate on potential sites based on recent developments. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Asda acquired 470 sites from Co-op and EG Group between 2022 and 2023, many of which are expected to be converted into Asda Express stores. It's highly likely that a good portion of the upcoming 25 stores will come from this pool. Former Co-op convenience stores and EG Group petrol station forecourts with attached retail space are good candidates, as these locations are already operational or easily convertible. Town centres that currently lack an Asda Express smaller could also be considered, as could suburban high streets with high footfall, and densely populated city neighbourhoods where large supermarkets aren't practical Remember, nothing has been confirmed at this point, and we'll need to wait for official announcements to know for sure.
