‘The game-changing batter was…': Ashwin says Shreyas Iyer's 87 vs MI overshadowed two match-winning players
Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has said that while Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer played some great shots during the Qualifier 2 match against the Mumbai Indians, the real 'game-changing' batting came from Josh Inglis and Nehal Wadhera. Ashwin stated that Inglis managed to take 20 runs from Bumrah over while not conceding any wickets which set up the momentum nicely for PBKS. Speaking on his YouTube show, Ash ki baat, Ashwin said, 'I definitely appreciate Shreyas for a couple of shots - that six over extra cover against Ashwini Kumar off a free hit. Whenever they needed a boundary, he got it. But the game-changing batter was Josh Inglis, along with Nehal Wadhera. Iyer is popular, so the credit that needs to go to Inglis and Wadhera might not end up going. But he played a 20-run over against Bumrah in the powerplay. They got Bumrah to stop the run-scoring and get a wicket. But not only did he not get a wicket, he was also hit for 20 runs. How did he do it? Inglis scored a six against the slower ball on the leg side, then waited to hit one over third man. The moment that the slower one went for a six, Bumrah did not have any option. He had to go hard length into the pitch. That one particular over changed the tide of the game,' Meanwhile, the former India cricketer was also high praises for PBKS opening batter Priyansh Arya, who he stated one might hear a lot about in Indian cricket.

‘Rohit-Virat retirement will create leadership vacuum': Ravichandran Ashwin
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin opened up on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's abrupt retirement, saying they left a leadership vacuum with them. India Test captain Rohit announced that he is calling it a day in the red ball cricket last week on May 7, before Virat dropped the bombshell of him retiring from Test cricket with immediate effect on Monday. 'Their retirements will definitely create a leadership vacuum. You can't buy experience, especially on tours like this. Virat's energy and Rohit's composure will be missed,' said Ashwin during a chat on his YouTube channel Ash ki baat. 'No matter how great a player is, even someone like Sachin Tendulkar had to retire one day. That's just how the game works,' he added. Ashwin, on the timing of Rohit and Kohli's retirements, said both senior players had more to offer. 'There will be a sense of fulfilment, but I honestly felt Kohli definitely had one-two years of Test cricket left in him,' Ashwin said. 'Rohit, I felt would at least go on till the England Test series, because there's a leadership vacuum in the team. Tests has been the finest (format for India) in the last 10-12 years, but just for the sake of leadership, Rohit should've played till the England series, and if he'd performed, he could've carried on and given some more leadership,' he added on Rohit. He even went on to say Rohit could have matched Virat's achievements in the longest format. 'Jitna Virat Kohli ka hua, utna Rohit Sharma ka bhi ho sakta tha (What Virat achieved, Rohit could have done too), but because Rohit missed a very-very crucial debut in Nagpur, otherwise I have no doubts in my head….he couldn't play 100 Tests because of that particular gap that he had in his Test career,' he said. Ashwin also backed Jasprit Bumrah for the captaincy role, saying the ace pacer deserves the captaincy role for India in the Test format.

Ravichandran Ashwin has backed Jasprit Bumrah for India Test captaincy in the Gautam Gambhir era. Reports suggest Bumrah may have declined the role due to workload management and Shubman Gill is being tipped as the frontrunner. read more Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for a leadership role in the Indian Test team under the new head coach Gautam Gambhir. Ever since Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from red-ball cricket, there have been speculations on who would be his successor. Ashwin backs Bumrah Speaking on the latest episode of his YouTube show Ash ki baat, Ashwin praised Bumrah and said that he could be a strong option for captaincy in the coming months. However, Ashwin acknowledged that the decision will ultimately be made by Indian selectors based on Bumrah's 'physical capacity.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I would definitely say it is the beginning of the Gautam Gambhir era. The team that Gambhir will take to England for five Tests will be a completely new team, a completely transformed team where Jasprit Bumrah would possibly be the senior-most player,' Ashwin said. 'Obviously, he is also an option for captaincy. I believe he deserves the captaincy, but the Indian selectors will take a decision based on his physical capacity,' Ashwin added. Ashwin believes that managing Bumrah's fitness will be important since he is a fast bowler and prone to injuries. Bumrah has been one of India's top performers in Test cricket over the years. He has also led the Indian team before during the 2022 tour of England when Rohit Sharma was injured and during the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test match last year as Rohit was back home due to the birth of his second child. Shubman Gill also in the race Many believe he has the leadership qualities to guide India in red-ball cricket. However, some reports suggest that the Indian team management is looking at Shubman Gill as the next captain of the Test team. According to reports, Bumrah is said to have turned down a captaincy offer, citing that he might not be available for every series due to workload management. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma having retired from Test cricket, the Indian team is heading into a new era. Kohli dropped the bombshell on Monday, just days after Rohit confirmed his departure from the longest format. It will be interesting to see how the new team shapes up under Gambhir's coaching now. ‘Bumrah is obviously an option for captaincy, he deserves it': Ashwin backs Jasprit for Test leadership role after Rohit-Kohli retirement
Former India cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin feels the Indian team is in for testing times ahead after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket in a span of one week. Speaking on the latest episode of Ash ki baat on YouTube, he said, 'We were in the middle of the KKR-CSK game when Rohit announced his retirement, and then today, Virat as well. I've been hearing the news of Virat's supposed retirement for the last two days, but they (BCCI) must've spoken with him as well; that's a personal conversation I would obviously not bring out here.' 'I had no idea that both of them would retire all of a sudden, as it would be testing times for the Indian cricket team,' he added. Ashwin also called for the new era under coach Gautam Gambhir. After taking over the coaching reins from Rahul Dravid, Gambhir had to endure a white-ball series loss in Sri Lanka, a whitewash against New Zealand in Test matches at home and a crushing defeat at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. A veteran of 106 Tests, Ashwin also backed ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah for the captaincy role. 'I would definitely say it is the beginning of the Gautam Gambhir era. The team that Gambhir will take to England for five Tests will be a completely new team, a completely transformed team where Jasprit Bumrah would possibly be the senior-most player,' he said. 'Obviously, he is also an option for captaincy (role). I believe he deserves the captaincy, but the Indian selectors will take a decision based on his physical capacity,' added Ashwin. It has been reported by the Indian Express that Shubman Gill is the frontrunner to take over the reins as the new captain of the Test team. According to the same report, it is understood that the senior selection committee, headed by former India all-rounder Ajit Agarkar, is of the opinion that 25-year-old Gill is the ideal candidate to take over as Test captain. However, the selectors will discuss the same with the BCCI before making a formal announcement. If appointed as Test skipper, Gill's first assignment will be the five-match Test series in England. Earlier, it was reported how India's fast bowling figurehead and vice-captain Bumrah is unlikely to be given a leadership role on the Test tour to England starting June-end. The star fast bowler had captained India to its only Test match win during the Australia tour at the turn of the year, apart from leading in two other Tests. But since Bumrah is unlikely to feature in all five Tests in England, as part of his workload management, the selectors had to look at another option.
