Spam buns, worm poutine and much more on the menu for Calgary Stampede

There will be fiery dill Coke, deep-fried pickle Oreos and tzatziki-twisted pickles, along with fruity pebble Korean hot dogs. Mopane worm poutine features the species of emperor moth, an important source of protein in South Africa. The "Spam-pede" bao bun, inspired by the Hawaiian snack, is filled with Spam, garlic shrimp and pineapple. On the artery hardening side of things, there will be Nashville hot chicken macaroni and cheese, a lobster tornado roll and deep-fried cinnamon buns. Organizers say more than 50 new midway foods will be available during the 10-day rodeo and exhibition, running July 4 to 13. "Our exhibitors spend months curating unexpected dishes that you won't find anywhere else but at the Calgary Stampede midway," said Stampede midway manager Ashley Warner.

Article content Article content Article content Article content Taking international inspiration, the Global Bites category of food features a spicy salmon nori taco deep fried in tempura batter, a Spam-pede bao bun loaded with Spam, garlic shrimp, pineapple, cucumber and seaweed, a cheesy ramen-stuffed burrito and more. Article content Bites get more daring in Foodie's Playground, with items like the Doritos fried pizza — a slice of pizza dipped in pancake batter and rolled in Doritos before being deep fried and a Fruity Pebble Korean dog. Also available will be a hot dog loaded with Skittles candy, a chicken burger topped with strawberry syrup and Fruit Loops, deep fried pickle Oreos and a mopane worm poutine — a unique twist on a Canadian classic, featuring crispy mopane worms, cheese curds, fries and gravy.
