Ratnagiri man visiting ailing daughter in Pimpri loses Rs 99,000 in online fraud
Pune: A 59-year-old man from
Ratnagiri
visiting his sick daughter at a hospital in
Pimpri
on Monday fell victim to an
online scam
, losing Rs 99,000.
"Around 2pm on Monday, the man received a call from an unknown person claiming his insurance policy had matured, but the benefits would go to his insurance agent's bank account instead of his own," sub-inspector Ashwini Ubale of the Sant Tukaramnagar police said, citing the complaint filed by the victim.
"The caller claimed the insurance agent had taken his signatures on documents without his knowledge and advised him to file a complaint, offering assistance in doing so," Ubale said.
She said that the caller told the victim he needed to pay Rs 99,000 as a deposit to lodge the complaint against the agent. "The caller convinced the victim to transfer Rs 99,000 and shared a bank account number. The man made the payment, but later realised he'd been scammed when the caller stopped responding. After verifying with his agent, who denied the allegations, the man filed a complaint," she said.
The officer said police investigations revealed that the money was transferred to a private bank account in Aundh. "We have written to the bank seeking details of that account," she said. MSID:: 121291701 413 |
