Decoding the ties between India and Maldives as Katrina Kaif gets appointed as the country's Global Tourism Ambassador, from strained to improved

The appointment of the actress comes at a time when the relations between India and Maldives are getting healthier after they were strained last year read more Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/ Visit Maldives) has announced Katrina Kaif as the Global Brand Ambassador for the Maldives. This collaboration comes on the heels of Visit Maldives' special Summer Sale Campaign, designed to entice more travellers to discover the natural beauty, vibrant marine life, and exclusive luxurious experiences that the Maldives offers. What Katrina Kaif said about the appointment The actress said, 'The Maldives represents the pinnacle of luxury and natural beauty — a place where elegance meets tranquillity. I'm honoured to be chosen as the face of the Sunny Side of Life. This collaboration is about bringing the finest travel experiences to global audiences, and I'm excited to help people around the world discover the unique charm and world-class offerings of this extraordinary destination.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Mr Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO & MD of Visit Maldives reacts Shiuree said, 'We are thrilled to welcome Katrina as our Global Brand Ambassador. Her vibrant personality and strong connection with audiences worldwide make her a perfect representative for the Sunny Side of Life, the World's Leading Destination for the past 5 consecutive years, especially as we start our Summer Sale push in key markets around the world.' When India and Maldives' relations were strained The appointment of the actress comes at a time when the relations between India and Maldives are getting healthier after they were strained last year. It all began in the first half of 2024 after Maldivian Defence Minister Mariya Didi made some derogatory remarks. The comments came in the backdrop of a controversy triggered by social media posts by a minister and other leaders in the Maldives days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the Lakshadweep archipelago. 'The Maldives has been famous in India for the wrong reasons, I would say especially on social media. We are not people like that. We love foreigners visiting our country, and we welcome you all to the Maldives,' Didi said at the Firstpost Defence Summit 2024. Talking about the island nation, Didi said 25 years ago it could not be found on maps, even though it covers an area of about 54,000 square kilometres, which is about the size of France. 'But 99 percent of our territory is water. Now how can the Maldives suddenly come on the chart. People are talking about the Maldives. If you look at where we are situated, we have four major sea lines of communication that pass through or near our archipelago,' she said, adding that stability is important in the region. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Didi said India had been the first responder when the Maldives required help. 'Like the Asian Tsunami, when we had difficulties we had India coming first as our first responder,' she said, adding that the Tsunami changed the sea bed as well, and many islands have disappeared while some new ones have emerged, and hydrographic charts need to be updated. How the ties were improved In August, 2024, both India and the Maldives agreed to sort out differences following Indian minister S. Jaishankar's visit to the Maldives, following a visit by the Maldivian PM to India to attend Modi's swearing-in ceremony in June. Ties have improved significantly since then. India has announced new investments and cooperation to help build infrastructure in the Maldives.

Sky News' Kay Burley poses alongside rarely seen son as she announces big move

Former Sky News star Kay Burley posed alongside her son and shared snaps from over the years as they bid farewell from their family home and prepared to move on to pastures new Kay Burley smiled alongside her son, Alexander 'Wolfie' Kutner, as they bid farewell to their family home. The 64-year-old former Sky News host reflected on her time in the home that is located in a historic village within the boundaries of Greater London. Kay, who was married to businessman Steve Kutner in the early 1990s, and shares her only child with him, took to social media to mark the "end of an era". The TV star uploaded a number of photographs on Instagram showing herself and her son at vairious points over the decades. ‌ Snaps also showed Kay testing out her guitar skills, and their adorable family dog leaning in for snaps too. Uploading the images on Friday, Kay wrote: "End of an era. Moving day from Harrow on the Hill." ‌ The news reporter continued: "I have spent half my life in this street and my son @wolfiekutner has spent his whole life here. He went to school a stone's throw away from the front door and we often had a house full of his schoolmates playing cricket in the garden. "I spent most of my working life at Sky based in this street. I remember being woken by my head of news and driving up the road in the dark on 31st August, 1997 not knowing what the day would bring - it was the morning Diana died." She added: "We will leave many memories behind." The collection of images drew attention from fans as they rarely see her with her son. Wolfie has a number of social media accounts that suggest he deals in luxury cars and luxury watches. Meanwhile, Kay appears to be easing herself into retirement life. In February this year it was revealed that Kay was retiring from Sky News after an impressive 36 years of service. Recapping highlights from her career at the station, the star signed out from her breakfast show for the final time that month. ‌ She told viewers: "From a standing start to one of the most recognised and valued brands in global news, it's been an honour and privilege to work with some of the best and hardest working teams in the business. "News by its very nature is often devastating and together we've covered so many life-changing events - from the tragic death of Diana, the shocking terror attack of 9/11; the Asian Tsunami; the Concorde air disaster. ‌ "But we've also enjoyed some wonderful high notes too, haven't we - the thrill of London winning the chance to host the 2012 Olympics; a plethora of royal weddings; jubilees and who can forget days and days and DAYS waiting for royal babies to arrive at the Lindo Wing. "But after over a million minutes of live TV news - more than anyone else in the world - it's time for me to indulge in some of my other passions - including my love for travel. "So, after covering 12 separate general elections - including Sir Keir Starmer's victory last year - I am retiring from Sky News - let politicians of every party just rejoice at that news! "Thank you for waking up and tuning in every morning. I can't tell you how much I have appreciated your support over the last three and a half decades: You're awesome." She went on to vow that she would keep fans in her life by sharing updates via social media - a promise she has gamely kept since bowing out from the spotlight.

Why is Kay Burley leaving Sky News? What we know as host issues statement

It's the end of an era for Sky News, as Kay Burley has announced her retirement after 36 years as the broadcaster's anchor. Burley has been with Sky News since its launch in 1989 and has been a trusted voice for viewers on breaking news stories from general elections to terror attacks, natural disasters to Royal births. On Wednesday morning as she closed her final Sky News Breakfast show, Burley shared her news with viewers, calling the job "an honour and a privilege". Here's what we know so far about Kay Burley leaving Sky News. Burley is known as the face of Sky News, but this morning dropped a bombshell announcement that she was quitting her role as the channel marked its 36th birthday. Making her leaving speech at the end of Wednesday's Sky News Breakfast, the 64-year-old said: "From a standing start to one of the most recognised and valued brands in global news, it's been an honour and privilege to work with some of the best and hardest working teams in the business. "News by its very nature is often devastating and together we've covered so many life-changing events - from the tragic death of Diana, the shocking terror attack of 9/11; the Asian Tsunami; the Concorde air disaster. "But we've also enjoyed some wonderful high notes too, haven't we - the thrill of London winning the chance to host the 2012 Olympics; a plethora of royal weddings; jubilees and who can forget days and days and days waiting for royal babies to arrive at the Lindo Wing. I can't tell you how much I have appreciated your support over the last three and a half decades: You're awesome. I will post more on my social media and hope to see you around. Please keep in touch." Sky News executive chairman David Rhodes paid tribute to Burley, saying: "With millions of minutes presenting live rolling news, Kay's legacy in television journalism is unmatched, as is her commitment to Sky's legacy. And I'm sure some MPs in Westminster will sleep easy knowing they won't face her indomitable questioning in the mornings." He added: "We thank Kay for her huge contribution to Sky, to the art of the interview and to British journalism. And we wish her the best of luck." Former Sky News journalist Adam Boulton wrote on X: 'The one and only @KayBurley announces she is leaving @SkyNews. 'Kay is unique, there are no other women of her background who have had such an impact on British news and current affairs. We have been friends and colleagues for forty years. Onward Kay I know it's going to be exciting!" Former BBC Newsnight producer Sam McAlister posted: 'Genuinely devastated to hear about @KayBurley leaving @SkyNews. An absolute icon. Smart as hell, sharp as they come, bloody amazing company. "Always a total inspiration to me as a single parent and woman from a different background. A sad day." We don't yet know who is set to replace Burley on Sky News, with channel executives sharing that the current line-up would continue without her for the moment. Rhodes said in his statement: "Kay confirmed that today was her final broadcast with Sky News. Of course, Breakfast continues — with the other current presenters and with our Friday-Sunday team." After such a long career in broadcasting, Burley has unsurprisingly found herself at the centre of a few controversies over the years. She had to apologise to guest Peter Andre in February 2010 when he became tearful after she aired comments by the former footballer Dwight Yorke. He had criticised Andre for volunteering to adopt Katie Price's eldest child Harvey, whose father is Yorke. In November 2019, she 'empty chaired' then Conservative Party chairman James Cleverly who she said had been a no-show for Sky News Breakfast — although Cleverly claimed he had never been booked to appear that day. One of Burley's most memorable controversies was over the coronavirus pandemic when she was found to have broken Covid rules despite regularly grilling politicians about lockdown rules. In May 2020, she questioned Cabinet minister Michael Gove over Dominic Cummings' trip to Barnard Castle, but that December she admitted to breaking the rules herself by throwing a 60th birthday party and was suspended from her role for six months. Sky News's political editor Beth Rigby and correspondent Inzamam Rashid were also both taken off air for three months as they had celebrated with Burley at her birthday party. Burley returned to Sky News in June 2021 and told the Daily Mail: "I thought I was Covid-compliant. I wasn't. I made a mistake. I was an idiot and I let myself and my viewers down. I'm sorry for what I did and for any heartache, I caused the loyal friends with me at the time.' More recently there were more than 1,500 complaints were made over on-air remarks by Burley about the Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Dr Husam Zomlot, on a 10 October show in 2023 following Hamas launching an attack on Israel. Ofcom ruled that the episode "gave a potentially misleading representation" of his views during Breakfast With Kay Burley.
