As Bay FC's offense struggles, will Asisat Oshoala help rediscover attack's rhythm?

Bay FC striker Asisat Oshoala has yet to score through six games this season after she led the squad in goals last year. Her reduced production has led to a decreased role, even as Bay FC continue to struggle on the attack, and the 30-year-old forward has started to express her frustration. Oshoala has started just three of Bay FC's six matches and came off the bench in the second half of the past two games, playing just 13 and 21 minutes respectively. She has taken two shots all season, neither of which have been on target. While she told the Chronicle it doesn't matter to her if she starts or comes off the bench, she conceded that this season has taken a toll on her. 'I'm not in the best place, and also like it's just so many things happening right now with me where I don't think I'm enjoying my second season here in the NWSL as much, obviously,' she said. 'But, yeah, it's things that come with the job.' Oshoala joined Bay FC as one of the league's most high-profile international signings, arriving as a six-time African Women's Footballer of the Year and the first African woman to win the UEFA Champions League with FC Barcelona, which won three titles while she was with the club. She scored 92 goals in 108 appearances for Barcelona across five seasons. The 30-year-old forward last scored in the NWSL playoffs, in Bay FC's loss to Washington on Nov. 10. She had five goals in the second half of last season and was one of Bay FC's only consistent scoring threats. This year, as Bay FC (2-2-2) has struggled to establish an attacking rhythm — scoring just six goals — Oshoala hasn't contributed. 'I really don't care when I play or how many minutes I play right now,' she said. 'All I care about right now is just how I feel, how my body feels, and how comfortable I get every day. … I don't know what your definition of chemistry getting better is like, but obviously we've not been kind of the most (cohesive) at the moment, so I don't see the chemistry right now but it's a building team, so we'll keep getting better.' Forward Racheal Kundananji scored her first goal of the season in last week's draw against Seattle. It was just the third goal from a Bay FC forward this season, and it came while Oshoala was on the bench. Despite her own initial struggles, Kundananji has remained in the starting lineup. Head coach Albertin Montoya attributed that to her work on the defensive side of the ball, an area Oshoala has not contributed to as frequently this year. The team needs to be 'getting her defensive responsibilities right as well,' Montoya said. 'In this league, you have to, and that's something that we're working on with her. So when she gets that and has the confidence in front of the goal to score goals and helps us defensively, we're good. And that's why, with (forward) Caroline (Conti), she gives us something else defensively right now, and it's just more organized. 'When we help (Oshoala) through this process of knowing how to defend and how to help us on that side of the field, she'll be in a good place.' Oshoala has yet to record a tackle this season. That's a stark contrast from her first NWSL campaign, when she tallied 33 tackles. She's also blocked just three passes and has one clearance beyond midfield. On offense, Oshoala has held possession just 31 times this season, fewer than rookie Karlie Lema (89) and Conti (37), who has played in just four matches and started two. Oshoala is also the only Bay FC forward without a shot-creating action this season. Even during her seven-goal campaign last year, Oshoala occasionally struggled with finishing. In this year's season opener at Utah, she missed a close-range opportunity and showed visible frustration, then didn't start the home opener a week later against Louisville. Montoya has changed lineups often this season, but in the win at North Carolina on March 19 and tie against Seattle a week later he played the same starters for consecutive games for the first time this season. If that continues Sunday against San Diego (3-2-1), Oshoala would come off the bench for a third straight game. At some point, Bay FC needs Oshoala to be the goal scorer they signed her to be. For now, both the club and Oshoala are still trying to figure things out. 'I know I have to take it one day at a time, see how I can help the girls,' she said. 'A lot of things can be better.'
