₹21,000 crore: The amount YouTube paid Indian content creators in last 3 years, says CEO Neal Mohan
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, at the inaugural World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai, revealed major facts and figures about the Indian creator economy. Neal mentioned that YouTubers in India uploaded a significant amount of content, with over 100 million channels uploading in the past year alone. Among these, 15,000 creators surpassed the milestone of accumulating a whopping one million subscribers. In doing so, YouTube paid out over ₹21,000 crore to Indian creators, artists, and media companies over the last three years. Also Read: Best time to buy a PS5? This investment will be specifically aimed at boosting India's creator economy. This comes after Indian content attracted 45 billion hours of watch time from viewers outside of India. Neal Mohan, CEO at YouTube, said, 'YouTube's ability to connect a creator anywhere with audiences everywhere has made it a powerful engine of cultural export, and few nations have leveraged this as effectively as India. Today, India isn't just a world leader for film and music – it's rapidly becoming what I'm excited to call a 'Creator Nation.' YouTube recently turned 20 years old. Happy birthday, YouTube! Twenty years since its 2005 debut, the streaming platform has grown into the indisputable champion of online video streaming. Fittingly for its 20th birthday, YouTube reported that, on average, there are over 20 million videos uploaded daily. In terms of stats to mark the occasion, the platform reported that in 2024, YouTube users averaged over 100 million comments on videos daily and that creators hearted comments from an average of 10 million viewers every day. In the next few weeks, YouTube TV members can experiment with building their own multiview with select non-sports content, starting with a small group of popular channels and expanding in the coming months. In addition, users can now create their very own personalised radio station with Ask Music. Ask Music is available on iOS and Android for all YouTube Premium and YouTube Music users. YouTube is now the second biggest website globally after Google, which acquired the site in 2006 for $1.65 billion. It's the number one most-visited website by Gen Z, followed by Instagram and TikTok, according to a report from market research agency Opeepl.
