Ask The Expert: Tips and tricks to make your makeup work for you

Ask The Expert is a monthly column to answer your questions on topics related to fashion and beauty. In this edition, professional makeup artist Ellie Pahlavan takes your questions on makeup application. What are your tips for making makeup last, especially in humid weather? – Sara, Pahang The first and most important step to long-lasting makeup is using a primer, and not necessarily a traditional makeup primer. A moisturiser with a strong grip or tacky finish can work just as well by helping your foundation adhere better to the skin. As long as your base has that gripping power, it's a great start to making your makeup last. The next essential product is compact or loose powder, applied after all your cream and liquid products. This step helps set everything in place and reduces shine, but it's important to note that powder is best suited for oily or non-mature skin types, as it can emphasise texture and fine lines on dry or mature skin. Use a brush to pick up the powder, tap off the excess on the back of your hand, then press it gently into the skin. Another great tool for longevity is a setting spray. When combined with primer and powder, a good setting spray can help lock in your makeup all day — even in hot and humid conditions. Ellie Pahlavan notes that while most people test foundation shades on their hands, the best place to test your foundation to get the most accurate colour is on your jawline, where your face meets your neck. Photos: Instagram/Ellie Pahlavan How do you apply red lipstick to ensure it doesn't smudge or bleed? – Joanna, Kuching A bold red lip can elevate any look – but keeping it from smudging or fading throughout the day takes a few simple tricks. Start by outlining your lips with a lip liner. Most lip liners have a tacky or waxy texture that helps grip the lipstick and prevent feathering. Choose a liner that matches your lipstick shade or is just slightly darker for a defined look. Choose the right lipstick: If you're using a matte or smudge-proof formula, you already have a good base for long wear. These formulas are designed to stay in place and require minimal touch-up. However, if you prefer a creamy or satin-finish lipstick, you'll need an extra step to keep it from moving throughout the day. After applying your lipstick, take a single layer of tissue and place it gently over your lips, then, using a small brush, dust a bit of loose translucent powder over the tissue. This allows just the right amount of powder to reach the lipstick and set it without altering the colour or texture. In what order should we apply foundation, concealer, and powder for a flawless base? – Dhanya, KL In today's world of makeup trends and techniques, I still believe that the original order of application – foundation, concealer, and powder – is the most effective way to achieve a flawless base. This timeless method works for all skin types; the key is adjusting the amount and type of product to suit individual needs. Starting with foundation helps even out 80–90% of the skin tone, including blemishes and under-eye darkness. By doing this first, you minimise the need for excess concealer, which is often thicker and heavier than foundation. This not only gives you a more natural finish but also helps your makeup wear better throughout the day. How do we know which type of foundation is best for our skin, and what's the difference? – El, PJ Liquid foundations are typically formulated with hydrating ingredients like water and oils, making them ideal for dry or normal skin types. They are easy to blend, offer a natural finish, and help keep the skin looking dewy and fresh. Whether the base is water- or silicone-based, the overall formula tends to be more nourishing and flexible on dry skin. Powder foundations are great for oily or combination skin, as they absorb excess oil and provide a more matte finish. Since they contain less oil, they help control shine and reduce the risk of makeup breaking down throughout the day. The key is to understand your skin type first, then choose a foundation formula that supports your skin's needs while delivering the finish you want. For about 80% of people, the skin tone on their hands is different from their face due to sun exposure, different skin texture and other factors. The best place to test your foundation is on your jawline, where your face meets your neck. This area gives you the most accurate match and helps avoid having a face that's lighter or darker than your neck. What's your advice for achieving a natural, dewy look without looking oily or overly shiny? – Vas, Johor The secret having a fresh, glowing and flawless dewy look stars with skincare: your canvas (your skin) needs to be well-prepped and hydrated. Step 1: Make sure your skin is properly cleansed, hydrated and nourished before applying any makeup. A dewy base starts with glowing skin, so use your moisturiser, hydrating serums and even a facial oil if needed. Step 2: Choose the right products by going for lightweight, radiant-finish foundations and concealers. Look for terms like 'dewy', 'glowy', 'luminous' and 'hydrating'. Avoid formulas that are too matte or heavy, as they can dull the skin's natural radiance. Step 3: Apply your base products in thin layers and use a sponge or a buffing brush to gently work them into the skin. The key is to blend well and avoid piling on too much product. This helps your skin breathe and give off that healthy, lit-from-within glow. For someone who only has 10 minutes to do their makeup in the morning, what are the essential steps they should never skip? – Melissa, Subang When you're short on time but still want to look fresh and put together, these three steps can make all the difference: First, sunscreen (preferably tinted): not only does it protect your skin, but if you choose a tinted sunscreen or a good BB/CC cream, it can also even out your complexion, no need for a heavy foundation on busy mornings. Next, multi-use lip products: a good lipstick or tinted balm can completely brighten your face and many modern formulas are designed to be used on the lips, cheeks, and even eyelids. This makes them perfect for a quick makeup routine with minimal effort and maximum impact. Third, mascara: to instantly open up your eyes and look more awake, a coat (or two) of mascara is a must. It enhances your natural lashes and pulls your whole look together. Do you have any questions on fashion and beauty? Ask The Expert: How do you keep your skin looking healthy as you age?

Ask The Expert is a monthly column to answer your questions on topics related to fashion and beauty. In this edition, Shiseido's Global Brand Unit global vice president of product development Emi Watanabe takes your questions on anti-ageing skincare. What should I look for in anti-ageing skincare products, in terms of ingredients, formulation, etc? – Susan, KL Beyond combating oxidation, look for products that enhance the skin's self-regeneration capabilities. An effective anti-ageing skincare product should fortify the skin's immune system, establish a robust foundation and help the skin achieve its full potential. When your skin can defend itself against damage, it can maintain its beauty over time. Read more: What is the viral 'caveman' skincare trend and is it really safe to try out? Emi Watanabe notes that it's never too early to start taking care of your skin, but the timing for using anti-ageing products can vary based on individual needs and skin types. Photo: Shiseido Are there types of products or ingredients I should avoid in anti-ageing products? – Lyn, KL Some ingredients can be more harmful than beneficial, particularly for certain skin types or sensitivities. For instance, harsh alcohols can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Similarly, harsh physical exfoliants can cause micro-tears in the skin, resulting in inflammation and damage. High concentration acids, if not properly supported with soothing and hydrating ingredients, can disrupt the skin's barrier, causing redness, peeling and increased sensitivity. Can I layer multiple anti-ageing products on my skin, and if so, in what order? – Caerra, KL Yes, you can layer multiple anti-ageing products on your skin, but it's important to do so in the correct order to maximise their effectiveness and avoid irritation. Here's a general guideline for layering: Cleanser: Start with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities and prepare your skin for the following products. Toner/Lotion: Apply a toner or lotion to balance your skin's pH, renew skin's clarity and enhance the absorption of subsequent products. Serums and moisturiser: Select a serum that enhances your skin's resilience and overall health and follow with a moisturiser to lock in hydration and provide a protective barrier. Sunscreen: In the morning, complete your skincare routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Sunscreen is crucial for preventing premature ageing. Opt for a sunscreen with SPF 50 to ensure maximum protection. Look for formulas that include beneficial skincare ingredients to further protect and nourish your skin. These ingredients can help neutralise free radicals, reduce inflammation, and support overall skin health. Is it ever too early to start using anti-ageing products? – Diana D., Kuching It's never too early to start taking care of your skin, but the timing for using anti-ageing products can vary based on individual needs and skin types. Generally, experts recommend starting an anti-ageing regimen in your mid-20s. This is when the production of collagen and elastin begins to slow down, leading to the first signs of ageing such as fine lines and loss of elasticity. Read more: How beauty brands are transforming the skincare experience with facial cabins Can lifestyle factors like diet, sleep, and stress management impact skin ageing? – Lynn, PJ Yes, lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep, and stress management can significantly impact skin ageing. A balanced diet rich in vitamins C and E, antioxidants, and healthy fats supports collagen production and skin repair. Proper hydration is also crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing dryness. Quality sleep plays a vital role in skin health by promoting cellular growth and repair. Lack of sleep can lead to increased signs of ageing, such as fine lines and dullness. Managing stress is equally important, as chronic stress can accelerate skin ageing through hormonal imbalances and inflammation. By adopting healthy lifestyle habits, individuals can help maintain youthful and radiant skin. Do you have any questions on fashion and beauty?
