Semi-final ties confirmed in Fred Conway Cumberland Cup

Favourites Penrith and Carlisle City have been handed away ties in the semi-finals of the Fred Conway Cumberland Cup. The two biggest sides left in the competition were kept apart in the last-four draw. But they must overcome away opposition in order to reach the final of the county senior cup. Carlisle City will go to Cleator Moor Celtic, while Penrith will head to Aspatria. The ties were confirmed in Tuesday evening's draw which was held on BBC Radio Cumbria. Northern League Division One side City, four-time winners, are bidding to get their hands on a cup they last won in the 2021/22 season. Their hosts, Cleator Moor Celtic who play in the West Lancashire League Premier Division, will be hoping to emulate their most recent success which came in the 2017/18 campaign - the seventh time they have lifted the trophy. Penrith, who also play in Northern League Division One, are hoping to win the competition for the first time since 2009/10. They have won it 18 times in their history. Their opponents Aspatria, from the Cumberland County League, have never won the Cumberland Cup but reached the final as recently as 2015/16 when they were defeated by Workington Reds. They were also runners-up to Carlisle United in 2004/05. Their respective routes to the semi-finals saw Carlisle City get past Workington in the last eight, while Aspatria defeated Wetheriggs United. Cleator Moor got the better of Keswick, and Penrith were winners against Unisun Athletic. The semi-final ties are to be played on or before March 15.
