Wrexham science centre gets £700k investment for planetarium
The funding, awarded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, will finance phase one of the project, featuring a new planetarium.
The centre currently hosts more than 85 interactive exhibits, a live science show, and more than 40 educational workshops for school visits.
The new 30-seat planetarium will add to these offerings, providing an immersive learning environment for school groups, community organisations, and families.
It is expected to be a major attraction, enhancing Wrexham city centre's cultural landscape and contributing to the visitor economy.
Over the past 18 months, Xplore! has engaged the public and local community in the redevelopment process.
A survey revealed that 94 per cent of respondents wanted a planetarium, describing it as a 'wow' experience.
One parent said: "Amazing!
"We can't wait—especially for the planetarium!
"We've been looking for something like this for years for our son with no success."

"The planetarium was the clear favourite in our public consultation, and we're excited to deliver something that will spark wonder, curiosity, and imagination for years to come.
"This is just the beginning of a bold new chapter for Xplore!"

Future phases of the Xplore! 2.0 redevelopment will see the introduction of an illusions zone, a dynamic water play area, a conferencing suite, a dedicated space for children under seven, and maker spaces, subject to securing further funding.
Dr Rosie Cane, cluster development manager at Space Wales, said: "We are delighted that Xplore! has secured funding for the first phase of their redevelopment project.
"The development of a new, immersive planetarium in Wrexham will help to spark curiosity in people of all ages, both locally and across the nation."
The new planetarium is expected to open in February 2026, coinciding with Astronomy Week.
Until then, the centre's pop-up planetarium will still be available for hire.
