Braves starting pitcher likely out for rest of season

The Atlanta Braves' pitching rotation took a hit on Friday as the team gave an update on AJ Smith-Shawver's elbow injury. The Braves confirmed Smith-Shawver tore his ulnar collateral ligament and is exploring his surgical options. Advertisement That likely means the rookie pitcher is out for the rest of the season. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Smith-Shawver left early during the first game of the Braves' doubleheader against the Phillies. The pitcher took a 96.6 mph line drive to his right ankle, but when Brian Snitker and the trainers went to the mound, he said he felt a 'pop' in his elbow. The Braves placed him on the injured list before the second game. 'It doesn't look good,' Snitker said between games. Smith-Shawver is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in nine starts this season with a 42-21 strike-to-walk ratio. [SIGN UP: WSB-TV Daily Headlines Newsletter]

(AP Photo/Matt Slocum) PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper remains day-to-day as he continues to recover from a bruised right elbow, leaving his return to the lineup uncertain. Harper was hit by a 95 mph fastball from Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider during the first inning on Tuesday. Although X-rays indicated no fracture, Harper described the injury as 'still super sore' and has yet to resume swinging a bat. Advertisement 'I'm not sure when I'm going to play again,' Harper said Friday before the Phillies opened a weekend series against Milwaukee. 'It hit me in a pretty bad spot. I think the swelling has gone down, which is good, but like I said, it's a really tough spot where he got me. I just want to be smart about it, too.' Harper's elbow, which underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022, remains a sensitive area. In light of the injury, Harper plans to wear a protective guard on his right elbow upon his return. 'It's really hard to find braces that feel good, that don't feel as bulky,' Harper said. 'I haven't really worn them my whole career. I have here and there, just to feel it. I did in spring training this year because of this reason. I didn't like the way it felt.' Despite the setback, the two-time National League MVP emphasized that he does not believe Strider's pitch was intentional. Advertisement 'Obviously there was no intent on it,' Harper said. 'He's a competitive guy, a really good pitcher.' Phillies manager Rob Thomson echoed Harper's sentiments, stating that he doesn't anticipate a stint on the injured list for the star player. 'We'll have to see (when he can return),' Thomson said. 'We have to get the swelling out and him be pain free, or close to it.' Harper took ground balls and fielded throws at first base before Friday's game, but he didn't throw any balls or swing a bat. Harper is hitting .267 with eight homers and 33 RBIs in 54 games this season. Alec Bohm has shifted from third base to first base to replace Harper. Edmundo Sosa has taken over at third. ___ AP MLB:

What Ronald Acuna's return means for the Atlanta Braves' struggling season (Image Source: Getty Images) Ronald Acuña Jr.'s return from knee surgery has lifted the spirits of the Atlanta Braves and given hope to a team that is finding its way this year. Because the Atlanta Braves are currently two games below .500 after facing the Padres, the return of their MVP, who hasn't played in nearly a year, comes at an important moment. Because of his immediate impact in both home runs and defence, Ronald Acuña Jr. might help the Atlanta Braves finally reach the World Series. Ronald Acuña Jr.'s immediate impact reshapes Atlanta Braves lineup dynamics Early this season, the Atlanta Braves' offence drew much attention, but Ronald Acuña Jr.'s return has already solved a lot of those problems. With a home run on his first at-bat, travelling 467 feet and leaving the bat at 115.5 mph - the hardest hit ball by any Braves player in the season - Freeman has clearly impressed that he is playing like an MVP again. Through the numbers from his first series against the San Diego Padres, we see why people are talking: two home runs, four hits in twelve at-bats, and the impressive skills that earned him the 2023 Most Valuable Player of the National League. The fact that Brian Snitker put Ronald Acuña Jr. at the top of the lineup shows how much he believes in the player's ability to get the Atlanta Braves off on the right foot. Atlanta Braves' championship window remains wide open with healthy Ronald Acuña Jr. The Atlanta Braves built their roster with championship goals, and Ronald Acuña Jr.'s return to health could give them everything they need to succeed. He showed off his defensive strength during his return series, including a throw to home plate clocked at 104.9 mph that revealed his powerful arm. Last year, Ronald Acuña Jr. was cautious after his ACL injury, but this time he feels secure and plays with total confidence in his knee. The series against the Philadelphia Phillies will again test Ronald Acuña Jr.'s health and the team's new teamwork. Thanks to fresh energy from Drake Baldwin and another strong game from Ozzie Albies, the Atlanta Braves look ready to climb in the National League East. Acuña Jr.'s great play, strong starting pitchers, and lively presence at Truist Park put the Braves in position to surge in the second half and get back to where they usually are in October. Spencer Strider Slams Performance in Return to Braves Rotation as ‘Not Acceptable'

Spencer Strider's return to the mound was met with anticipation. His reaction after it? Disappointment. Making just his second start of the 2025 season and first since landing on the injured list with a right hamstring strain on April 21, the Atlanta Braves' flame-throwing righty didn't mince words after Tuesday night's 5–3 loss to the Washington Nationals. "Didn't give us a chance to win the game, really," Strider said bluntly. "Didn't execute, stuff wasn't consistent … Not acceptable for me." Strider labored through 4.1 innings, surrendering six hits, four earned runs, one walk, and three strikeouts on 75 pitches (46 strikes). A three-run Nationals rally in the bottom of the second - just moments after Atlanta had taken a 3–0 lead - proved pivotal. "Hate to see the guys come back, put a three-spot up there and then go out and immediately give up the lead," Strider added. "That's just one of those things you never want to do." The outing marked a step back from Strider's season debut last month, when he showed glimpses of his All-Star form in a five-inning effort against Toronto, allowing just two runs while striking out five. Still, Braves manager Brian Snitker urgedx patience. "He's got to start somewhere," Snitker said postgame. "The more he throws, the better he's going to get. As long as he's healthy and makes his next start, I think it's going to continue to get better." It's not just the results that bother Strider - it's the principle. Even with Atlanta trailing by just one when he left the game, the 26-year-old viewed the performance as a letdown to a roster that made room for his return by optioning lefty Dylan Dodd. "We sent a pretty good guy down that was supposed to pitch in my spot, so that's not lost on me," Strider said. "If I can't be better, I don't need to be out there." That mentality is part of what's fueled Strider's meteoric rise since being drafted out of Clemson in the fourth round in 2020. He was the NL's strikeout king and win leader in 2023, finishing fourth in Cy Young voting with a 20–5 record and 281 strikeouts. Now, after enduring a season-ending elbow surgery last year, the road back is underway - but Strider isn't in the mood for silver linings. "I take no joy in not giving us a chance," he said. "If I don't feel like I can provide for the team, then I don't take much pleasure in losing games for us."
