Houston weather: Severe thunderstorms possible

The Brief Severe Threat Increasing For Houston Sunday Evening - Scattered Strong Storms Typical June Weather Expected Next Week Hurricane Season Begins HOUSTON - Southeast Texas residents can expect a hot and humid Sunday with an Ozone Action Day in effect and an increased risk of severe thunderstorms developing later in the day, primarily bringing threats of large hail and damaging winds. Most of the FOX 26 area will see afternoon highs back in the lower 90s. Another disturbance will bring scattered showers and storms Sunday afternoon and evening. Watch for these storms to move in from the north to the south across Houston. A few of these storms could be on the strong side with hail, gusty winds and frequent lightning. The Storm Prediction Center has Southeast Texas under a Level 1 and/or 2 (out of 5) risk for a severe thunderstorm with the highest risk north. Also, keep in mind that ozone levels will be elevated on Sunday. So an air quality alert continues through Sunday evening. If you have respiratory issues, you may want to limit your amount of time outdoors. Weather for the first week of June looks like typical close to summer weather with temperatures in the low to middle 90s and a few chances for showers and storms. Heat index values will likely be near 100. So be careful in the heat by staying hydrated and taking breaks in the shade if you have to work outside. The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins Sunday. All is looking quiet for now with Saharan dust moving across the Atlantic Ocean. NOAA is predicting 13-19 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes and 3-5 major hurricanes. Now is the time to prepare. Tropical Storm Alvin formed in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Thursday and has now fallen apart and become Post-Tropical near Cabo San Lucas. The Source Your Gulf Coast Weather Authority

Warm, humid weather continues with daily chances of rain

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – After starting out with slightly lower humidity and temperatures in the 60s, Sunday will see a mixture of sunshine and cloud cover. By lunchtime, a few showers, and potentially a rumble of thunder, will develop and spread across the area. This will help break the heat for a lucky few areas. Otherwise, temperatures reach the upper 80s. Tonight, some dry air will linger allowing temperatures to drop into the upper 60s. Monday, humidity creeps into the forecast while temperatures climb back to the 90s. Outside of a few cooling storms, there won't be much in the way of heat relief for the area. This starts a long stretch of typical summertime heat and humidity with daily rain chances. Sunday is the first official day of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Tropical outlooks have this season once again being above-average when it comes to how many named storms form. However, it only takes one system to make it a bad season. Through the next 7 days, no development is expected in the Atlantic Basin. Locally, the next seven days remain fairly quiet around the area with daily rain chances and hot temperatures in the afternoons. Download the KLFY Weather App by clicking here. ‘We will be cleaned out': Make sure you're ready for hurricane season

Once you hear a storm is coming, it's often too late to stock up on the materials needed to be prepared. 'Things fly off the shelves in a heartbeat, and no matter how many we stock up ahead of time, we will be cleaned out within a few days,' Doug Kreie of Hagan Ace Mandarin explained on Saturday. That's why it's best to plan ahead. The Atlantic Hurricane Season starts on June 1. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Kreie, the general manager of the Hagan Ace Hardware in Mandarin, outlined for Action News Jax the essentials needed for hurricane kits, as well as how much it'll cost to be ready in case of disaster. 'For your basic items, for flashlights, batteries, maybe a weather radio, toilet paper, water, those things can add up quickly,' Kreie highlighted. 'But about $100 to $200 should get most kits fulfilled.' Beyond those everyday household essentials, Kreie said one of the items needed for hurricane preparedness and that they typically see fly off the shelves first: gasoline cans. Kreie said those gasoline cans can go a long way in helping make sure you're not stuck waiting at the pump when it comes time to evacuate. 'Last year it was several hundred gas cans in just a few days [that we sold,] and we couldn't get 'em fast enough,' Kreie said. 'And we already had a good stock.' Maritzha Rivera-Clapp spoke to Action News Jax while shopping at the Ace on Saturday, and reminded us not to forget about those furry friends. 'You forget about the pets until the time comes,' River-Clapp explained. 'You need to make sure you have a plan for the pets, whether a shelter or a family friend that lives in a different part of town, prepare for your pets and have water and food for everybody in the house.'
