Pink Floyd Has Been Charting No. 1 Albums For More Than Half A Century

Many rock bands are lucky to make it to their first anniversary, and even successful ones usually only stay together for a few years. Only a handful of acts that find any real commercial success can continue to churn out appealing material for decades. Pink Floyd certainly stands among the few, but also in a league of its own. The rock outfit is back at No. 1 in the United Kingdom this week with At Pompeii - MCMLXXII. As the group returns to the top spot on the main albums ranking, it furthers its stretch of champions into yet another decade. Pink Floyd has been racking up No. 1 albums in the U.K. for more than half a century. In fact, it's been almost 55 years since the group collected its first No. 1 on the list of the most consumed albums in the country. The English rockers are now counted among the very, very few acts that have stretched No. 1s out across several decades. Pink Floyd first reached No. 1 on the Official Albums Chart in 1970 with Atom Heart Mother. The group would go on to send most of its next several releases to the summit, including Wish You Were Here, The Final Cut, The Division Bell, Pulse (live), and The Endless River. It's been just over a decade since Pink Floyd last collected a No. 1 album in the U.K. The Endless River stands as the band's last studio LP, and it hit the top spot in 2014. Since then, Pink Floyd has re-released special collections, but none of them have climbed toward the summit. At Pompeii was buoyed by the re-release of the concert film of the same name in theaters around the world earlier this year. Impressively, Pink Floyd has been releasing music for even longer than the 55 years in which the band has been scoring No. 1s. Atom Heart Mother was the group's fifth full-length. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which introduced the world to Pink Floyd, dropped in 1967. The rockers collected four top 10s on the Official Albums chart before finally reaching the top spot.

The album was released alongside a newly remastered version of the 1972 film of the same name with newly mixed audio from Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson, with the movie showing footage of the group performing in a Roman amphitheatre spliced with clips of them in the recording studio. Previously, Pink Floyd have topped the UK Albums Chart with Atom Heart Mother (1970), Wish You Were Here (1975), The Final Cut (1983), The Division Bell (1994), Pulse (Live) (1995) and The Endless River (2014). The record also topped the vinyl albums chart. Pink Floyd were formed by singer Syd Barrett, drummer Nick Mason, guitarist and singer Roger Waters, and keyboardist Richard Wright in the mid-1960s, before the group were later joined by singer and guitarist David Gilmour. The band is best known for the albums Dark Side Of The Moon (1973), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979), as well as songs such as Comfortably Numb, Another Brick In The Wall and Money. The rest of the albums chart top five is completed by Sabrina Carpenter's Short 'N' Sweet (two), Ed Sheeran's + – = Divide X – Tour Collection (three), Fleetwood Mac's 50 Years – Don't Stop (four), and The Weeknd's The Highlights (five). Alex Warren's Ordinary has secured its eighth consecutive week at number one. The track is the longest-running number one single of 2025 so far. The rest of the singles chart top five is made up of Ravyn Lenae's Love Me Not (two), Chappell Roan's Pink Pony Club (three), WizTheMc and Bees And Honey's Show Me Love (four), and Ed Sheeran's Azizam (five).
