As per police records, Atti was booked twice under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA). A resident of Sayyad Nagar in Hadapsar area of Pune city, Atti was currently on the run in at least two offences, including an extortion case, police said. Police said the stringent MCOCA was invoked against Tipu Pathan and his gang members, including Atti, who were allegedly involved in this crime. While nine accused were arrested in this case, the search was on for Atti. During the search operation, police received information that Atti was residing at his relative Raju Ahmed Shaikh's house at Lamboti village in Mohol taluka of Solapur district. Accordingly, a crime branch team comprising assistant police inspector (API) Madan Kamble and constables Vinod Shivale, Amit Kamble and Akbar Shaikh reached Mohol and a laid trap at Raju Shaikh's house with the help of Solapur rural police, around 3.30 am. According to a press release issued by the police, when the police team reached the house, Atti pointed a gun at them while his wife started screaming. According to the press release, Atti then and fired bullets at the police team from a country-made pistol saying, 'tum mujhe pakadte kya, aaj tumharach khel khatam karta Hun, mai tumko jinda nahin chodunga (You want to catch me, I will finish your game today, I will kill you).' According to police, Kamble fired at Atti's lower body from his service pistol 'in self-defence and to protect other policemen'. As Atti continued firing at the police team, API Kamble again shot at him, leaving him injured, the press release stated. Police then took Atti to the Civil Hospital in Solapur around 5 am, where he was pronounced dead. Speaking to the media persons in Solapur, Atti's wife alleged that he had not fired at the police team. But the police have denied the allegation. API Kamble lodged an FIR against Atti and his wife at the Mohol police station in Solapur rural, under BNS sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132, 3(5) and sections of the Indian Arms Act. Police said Atti's wife has been booked for allegedly deterring public servants from discharging their duty. Police said two country-made pistols have been seized along with nine live cartridges and two machetes (Koyta) from the room where he was currently residing. A probe is on to know how Atti had procured the pistols illegally. Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) Pankaj Deshmukh of Pune City Police said Atti was booked in about 15 crimes in Pune city, which included offences like attempt to murder, robbery, and extortion. Police said Atti and his aide Noman Sayyad, 20, were allegedly involved in an armed robbery of a food delivery worker, which took place on May 14 in the Sayyad Nagar.
