Mamelodi Sundowns tie down utility player
Mamelodi Sundowns have tied down utility player Aubrey Modiba for the upcoming season as his contract was set to expire. Modiba has been with Sundowns for five years having joined them from crosstown rivals SuperSport United. The 29-year-old left-footed player has become an important member of this Sundowns team over the years. Now, SABC Sport reports that Sundowns had until 31 May to trigger a one-year option they had on Modiba's contract. And they have since done so, making sure that Modiba remains at Chloorkop for another season. Furthermore, Sundowns still have another one-year option on Modiba's current deal, meaning the left-footer may stay until 2027. Modiba has featured 162 times for Sundowns, scoring nine goals and providing 17 assists in the process. He recently lifted the Betway Premiership trophy which was his fourth league medal with the Brazilians. Aubrey Modiba of Mamelodi Sundowns. 'The Tshwane giants had until May 31 to exercise the option to hold on to Modiba until June 2026 – with yet another clause to extend that deal for another season if they so wish.' Sundowns' Modiba looking to emulate class of 2016
'We have been knocking and flirting with it and we are finally in the final." said Modiba. Aubrey Modiba is aiming to follow in the footsteps of the Mamelodi Sundowns 2016 squad that lifted the CAF Champions League trophy. The Brazilians are on the verge of yet another significant achievement in Africa's premier club competition. ALSO READ: Sundowns' Lebusa wary of Pirates' Champions League slayer They are set to take on Pyramids FC in a two-legged final, with the first leg kicking off at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday afternoon. Only Themba Zwane and Denis Onyango remain from the triumphant side of nine years ago. Thapelo Morena was part of the squad at the time but was ineligible to play, having just arrived from Bloemfontein Celtic. 'The guys that have won it, have explained how important it is to win this competition. When we arrived here, we had the mentality of wanting to do well in this competition because of the previous pool of players, but it hasn't happened yet,' Modiba said ahead of the big final. 'We have been knocking and flirting with it and we are finally in the final. We just want that joy they had in 2016. You could see the celebrations in the county, fans were happy, and everyone at the club. We want to bring back the happiness and positivity going forward. It would be great for us to win it because we want to make history at this club, and as players, we really want to win trophies. 'Right now, having played so many Champions League games at Sundowns, we understand what it takes to reach the final and try to win it because it has been eluding us for so many years, and I think we are on the right track now,' he added. Although Pyramids are making their debut in a Champions League final, Modiba isn't underestimating them. The Cairo-based side secured their place by eliminating Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals. Masandawana and the Egyptian outfit have faced each other twice before, with Sundowns winning one encounter and the other ending in a goalless draw. 'We are expecting a tough game against Pyramids, they are a great team. They do well home and away so we just have to apply ourselves well and try to win the game especially at home,' the Bafana Bafana international concluded. ALSO READ: Ncikazi says Orlando Pirates still have a lot to play for 'They have signed a few players from the last time that we played them. I think they have now gained more experience in the champions league and hence they are in the final. 'They are doing well even in their own league and they are competing with Al-Ahly. They are a team that has evolved so much and they have a different approach from the last team we played.'

Modiba's Redemption Mission: Sundowns star eyes glory after 2017 heartbreak
Few players will be carrying the weight of unfinished business like Aubrey Modiba on Saturday at Loftus Stadium in Pretoria. The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder is preparing for the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final against Egyptian side Pyramids FC, but for Modiba, this isn't just another game. It's a second chance, a shot at redemption eight years in the making. Back in 2017, a much younger Modiba featured in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup final with SuperSport United, only to fall short against TP Mazembe. That painful memory still lingers, and now fuels his hunger to finally conquer the continent. 'It'll be great for us because we really want to make history in this club as players,' Modiba said. 'We always want to win big trophies and the last one I played in with SuperSport, you know, it was our first one and we didn't have much experience actually, and we saw how we fell short in that game.' Much has changed since that final in 2017. Modiba, now 29, has matured into a regular for Bafana Bafana and a key figure in a Sundowns side that continues to dominate domestically. After clinching an eighth consecutive PSL title, the Tshwane outfit now sets its sights on continental glory, a title that has eluded them since 2016. 'Right now, I think having played so many TotalEnergies CAF Champions League games at Sundowns…we understand what it takes to be able to reach the final and try and win it,' he explained. 'It's been eluding us for so many years. So, I think right now we're on the right track. We just have to make sure that we do well in both legs. But you know, firstly at home, I think we'll need to do well at home.' Having come so close before, this is the opportunity to finally right the wrongs of 2017. And if there's one thing the left-footed dynamo has learned, it's that finals are won not just with flair, but with resilience, experience and belief. Now, with one of Africa's most feared squads, a tactically astute and winning coach, and a dream within reach, Modiba and Sundowns are determined not to let this one slip. And if they succeed, Aubrey Modiba's name will be forever etched in gold, not just as a league champion, but as a continental one too.
