Health Minister announces details of fixes for Auckland City Hospital

"This government is committed to investing in and upgrading critical infrastructure that supports our health system - and that includes ensuring the hospitals we rely on every day are safe, modern, and fit for purpose," Brown said. The government's Budget last month included funding for a number of health infrastructure improvements at Nelson, Palmerston North, Wellington and Auckland City hospitals. The latest funding will be spent to pay for critical upgrades and replacements to the power, heating, building management, and safety systems that support clinical services at Auckland City Hospital and Greenlane Clinical Centre, Brown said. RNZ revealed in April that Health New Zealand has admitted it marked an upgrade to faulty pipes at Auckland City Hospital as complete when in fact it was not . Health NZ said in a response to a request under the Official Information Act ( to RNZ it had fixed them. But Brown said in a speech in March that the water system had failed twice recently. Today he said: "Replacing the hot water pipe system in the main building of Auckland City Hospital is a priority within the Health Infrastructure Plan, and this investment will help speed up delivery by funding the design work for the next stage of this project. Getting ahead on the design work now will mean we can fast-track the next stage by eight months." The new funding builds on the first two stages of the remediation programme, which are due for completion by the end of 2025. Health New Zealand would manage the work to minimise any disruption to clinical services, and ensure patients and staff were not affected. "These upgrades are about ensuring Auckland Hospital is able to deliver reliable care for patients and has increased resilience through upgraded systems." This third investment tranche is part of the government's $1 billion Budget 2025 hospital infrastructure investment includes:

'Mum went airborne': Son on alleged hit-and-run that left two injured
An Auckland man is pleading for help to find his missing dog after an alleged hit-and-run in Paremoremo left his mother and her friend injured during a Sunday morning walk. Emergency services were called to Attwood Rd, Paremoremo at around 7.10am on Sunday to reports two pedestrians had been struck by a white ute while they were walking their dogs. St John said it responded with two ambulances and one manager to the scene. "Our crews assessed and treated two patients, one in a serious condition who was transported to Auckland City Hospital, and one in a moderate condition who was transported to North Shore Hospital," a spokesperson said. Sergeant Jason Cleeton said police were working to identify the driver of the vehicle. ADVERTISEMENT "The ute was travelling on Attwood Rd towards Paremoremo Rd. It sustained some damage in the crash, which will likely be noticeable." Mitchell Prouse told 1News it was "just flight mode" when he got the call. "I chucked some shorts and a shirt on and just ran out of the door barefoot; I didn't even think to get the car." The pair, who walked the road with their dogs almost everyday for the past 20 years, had been walking on the white line next to the road when they were hit, he said. "Mum went airborne and landed in a ditch, and Sue in front got hit and thrown to the side. It was shocking when I saw Mum in the ditch, and I thought she was paralysed, and then it was just rage. "The guy left and both of them could have been dead." The 27-year-old said his mother had several broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and lower fractures to her spine. Prouse said the neighbourhood had been "awesome" in helping the search for Luna. "I was away until about 1.30ish, and by the time I got back, there were still people walking the streets." He urged people to contact police if they knew anything. "There's only around 200 houses down here, someone knows where this vehicle came from. If you've left at around 7 in the morning, you either live here or you were here last night." Woman seriously injured in cliff fall at Auckland beach
A rescue helicopter landed on rocks near the base of the cliff and flew the injured woman to Auckland City Hospital. Photo: Supplied / Auckland Rescue A woman suffered life-threatening injuries after falling 20 metres down a cliff onto rocks at an Auckland beach. The accident occurred about 3.45pm on Monday at Musick Point, a popular reserve at the tip of a peninsula near Bucklands Beach. A Westpac rescue helicopter landed on rocks nearby and flew her in a critical condition to Auckland City Hospital. An update on her condition on Tuesday morning was not yet available.

One killed in horror crash on Auckland motorway, four injured
A man has died and four others are injured after a horror crash on Auckland's Northwestern Motorway overnight. Officers "became aware of a car on its roof in the citybound lanes" on State Highway 16, around Pt Chevalier, shortly after 11.05pm, a police spokesperson said. "One person had been ejected from the vehicle and another was trapped inside it, who was found to be deceased." Footage from the scene showed officers inspecting an overturned red car. St John said it responded with four ambulances, two rapid response units, and two managers. ADVERTISEMENT "Our crews assessed and treated four patients. One in a serious condition who was transported to Middlemore Hospital, one in a serious condition, one in a moderate condition, and one in a minor condition who were transported to Auckland City Hospital." King's Birthday road tolls stands at four A woman died in hospital on Saturday after a single-vehicle crash in Port Waikato on Friday night. A two-vehicle crash in Northland near Waiomio, south of Kawakawa, killed one person just after midnight on Saturday. A man died in Waipa, Waikato, after his vehicle rolled into a paddock on Saturday morning at around 7.40am. The official Easter holiday road toll period was from 4pm on Friday to 6am on Tuesday. Last year, three people died on New Zealand roads during the same period.
