AUDI E5 Sportback Revealed With 770 Km Range, 100 kWh Battery Pack
Audi's EV sub-brand in China, called 'AUDI', has unveiled its first production model in Shanghai, the E5 Sportback. The electric vehicle is based on the new Advanced Digitized Platform (ADP) developed with the joint efforts of Audi and MG owner, SAIC Motor. Meanwhile, the design is inspired by the Audi E Concept, which was unveiled in November 2024. Along with this, the brand will also unveil two more all-electric models with the sub-brand's badge. These models will make their debuts in 2026 and 2027. In terms of design, the Audi E5 Sportback shares lots of similarities with the E Concept. This can be seen in the form of the flat front fascia with a rectangular shape. Following a minimalistic pattern, it has a slim headlamp design and a few contours on the bonnet. The black loop, present on the front fascia along with the headlamp, sensors, air curtains, and radar at the front and rear end. Another major attention-grabbing element is the 'AUDI' logo replacing the four rings. The majority of the car's controls are operated through this expansive screen, leading to the absence of physical buttons. It functions on AUDI OS, and customizable screen layouts guarantee that essential information is consistently highlighted in the main menu, allowing for quick navigation through touch gestures. For safety, the electric car comes equipped with loads of features. This pack consists of the AUDI 360 Assisted Driving system, which works using a roof-mounted LiDAR unit, 12 ultrasonic sensors, three long-range radars, and a set of cameras. All of this contributes to giving the vehicle autonomous driving capabilities. The E5 Sportback is equipped with 800-volt charging technology, which allows for a range of 370 kilometers in just 10 minutes of charging. While complete technical details are still pending, the model will be available in four unique variants and will offer both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options. Depending on the variant chosen, power outputs will range from 300 hp to 787 hp in the high-performance version. The variant with a 100 kW battery pack will offer a range of up to 770 km on a single charge.

Shanghai auto expo opens with strong foreign presence

Photo: AFP The world's largest auto industry expo opens its doors on Wednesday in Shanghai, showcasing the new electric world order even as mounting trade barriers risk dampening China's global ambitions. With nearly 1,000 exhibitors present, foreign carmakers are raring to show they can keep pace with the ultra-competitive Chinese firms that dominate the sector's electric frontier. Beijing's historic backing of EV and hybrid development has seen the domestic market flourish, with analysts considering it younger-leaning and more open to novelty. It is the world's biggest, still growing while other major markets see declines. "Domestic growth in China is being driven by rapid adoption of electric vehicles, increasingly with intelligent-vehicle features such as autonomous-driving systems," a report released on the eve of the show by consultancy AlixPartners said. Auto Shanghai, which runs until May 2, will see a flurry of launches for electric, high-tech new models – luxury SUVs, saloons and multi-purpose vehicles. On Tuesday night Volkswagen, the largest foreign group operating in the country, unveiled a series of new vehicles and a driver assistance system built "in China for China" – its play to reverse its sliding fortunes there. "Our biggest push in EV history begins here," the group's China head Ralf Brandstatter said. Exhibitors range from state-owned behemoths, start-ups such as Nio and Xpeng, tech giants with skin in the game such as Huawei, and consumer electronics-turned-car company Xiaomi. The domestic contest has undoubtedly pushed Chinese companies to develop faster and fostered innovation. On Monday, battery giant CATL announced it had developed a quicker charging model than rival BYD – one that can regain a 520-kilometre in just five minutes of charging time. Last year, China exported 6.4 million passenger vehicles, more than 50 percent above second-ranked Japan, according to AlixPartners. There are still potential roadblocks though. Nio on Tuesday said it had underestimated the difficulties of expanding into Europe, blaming logistical hurdles and noting tariffs would have an impact on price competitiveness. Tariffs will also be on the minds of foreign companies who make cars in China themselves, such as General Motors and Ford. However, exports to Russia and the Middle East have helped cushion these and other tariff impacts, AlixPartners said Tuesday. And although the levies will increase the cost of China's vehicle component exports by about 24 percent, "this represents only about 3.8 percent of China's total auto industry production value", it noted. "Anyone who says that China is becoming less important and weaker should look at Shanghai," warned German automotive expert Ferdinand Dudenhoeffer in a note. "The opposite is true. If our car industry wants to recapture the successes of the past, it must become more Chinese." (AFP)
