Red carpet event caps year for Soroptimist Club of Monroe County
Monroe County's chapter of Soroptimist International marked the close of its year with a red carpet–themed appreciation event that combined fun, food and philanthropy.
The celebration, held June 17 at First Merchants Bank, featured the installation of new members, financial contributions to local nonprofits and some star-studded flair, according to a community announcement.
The event welcomed four new members to the Soroptimist International of Monroe County: Danielle Bowman, Melissa Bomia, Nicole Ernst and Karissa Lomas. District III Director Gail Hutra conducted the installation ceremony.
The evening also included the presentation of funding checks to organizations the club supports annually. This year's recipients included Paula's House, New Beginnings Mercy House, Holiday Camp and FCSS–Sunrise House, according to the announcement.
To recognize the contributions of existing club members, organizers handed out customized 'Soro Awards' in an Academy Awards-style format.
Guests and members enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and desserts during the event, which carried the theme 'Walk the Red Carpet — The Academy Awards of Soroptimist.'
Among the honored guests were Midwestern Governor Audrey Jarvey and Governor-Elect Ruth Waggoner of Soroptimist International, as well as Jarvey's husband Don, all traveling from chapters outside Michigan. District III Secretary Pricilla Hutra formally welcomed them on behalf of Monroe Mayor Robert E. Clark, delivering a written greeting from the city.
Soroptimist International of Monroe County is part of a global volunteer network committed to improving the lives of women and girls through access to education and training aimed at achieving economic empowerment.
