Woodbury County correctional officer pleads not guilty to allegedly assaulting inmate
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A correctional officer at the Woodbury County Jail accused of assaulting and injuring an inmate has pleaded not guilty. Austin Svendsen, 29, of Sioux City, submitted his written plea on Tuesday, March 18, per court documents. He is charged with one count of assault, a serious misdemeanor. Dominican judge holds hearing for Iowan's claim of unlawful detainment Documents state that on Feb. 14, 2025, a Woodbury County Jail inmate was told to pack his belongings and move to another jail cell. However, when the inmate started to argue with jailers, Svendsen and other guards then allegedly grabbed the inmate and took him to the ground. Svendsen allegedly kneed the victim in the abdomen and repeatedly hit him in the face. The victim suffered cuts, bruising, and a concussion, documents state. Woodbury County correctional officer arrested for alleged assault of inmate
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A correctional officer with the Woodbury County Jail is accused of assaulting an inmate and causing a concussion. Austin Svendsen, 29, has been charged with serious assault, a serious misdemeanor. Svendsen was working as a correctional officer in the Woodbury County Jail on Feb. 14 when he allegedly assaulted an inmate. Officials investigating deaths of two northwest Iowans Documents state that an inmate was told to pack his belongings and move to another jail cell but the inmate started to argue with jailers. Svendsen and other jailers then allegedly grabbed the inmate and took him to the ground. Svendsen then allegedly kneed the victim in the abdomen and hit him repeatedly in the face. The victim suffered cuts, bruising, and a concussion, documents state. An arrest warrant was issued on Feb. 14 and was served on March 10. He then bonded out on the day of his arrest.
