WA Avocado Export Regional Forum is coming to the South West this month with a host of industry experts in tow

Get the toast out, because a whole heap of avocado experts are coming to Manjimup. The WA Avocado Export Regional Forum is coming to the South West this month with a host of industry experts in tow across three avocado-themed events. The free events are being delivered by Avocados Australia as part of the Hort Innovation-funded project Avocado Market Access and Trade Development aiming to bolster WA's impressive commitment to the super fruit. In 2023-24 Australian avocado growers produced 150,913 tonnes of avocados supplying all year round with WA's growers producing 44 per cent of the total. The events will kick off with the WA Grower Regional Forum on June 18 from 8am to 4pm at the Macedonian Community of Manjimup Hall. The next day the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat breakfast will kick off at 7.30am to 8.45am at the Kingsley Motel Hotel before wrapping up with the WA Export Regional Forum from 9am to 1.20pm in the same venue. Avocados Australia chair Matt Kleyn will be present at each event and said he was keen to meet growers. At the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat, Mr Kleyn will be joined by Avocados Australia's WA director Duncan Wells. Avocados Australia CEO John Tyas will be attending all three events and encouraged WA growers who have any questions or issues to raise them at the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat breakfast. 'Events like these provide growers with the chance to fact find and source the best information to help them improve their businesses,' he said. Growers can register for the Grower Regional Forum HERE , the Export Regional Forum HERE and the Avo Chat HERE .

Australia eyes India with it's premium Avocados

A growing health-conscious consumer base and increased exposure to global food trends is driving interest among Indians in international food and fruits, said John Tyas, CEO, Avocados Australia, an entity that promotes Australian avocados in key global markets. With this trend fast catching up, Australia is making a strong bid to penetrate into the premium fruit segment with Australian avocados. 'India is an exciting and high-potential market for Australian avocados. Continued efforts in education, retail partnerships, and supply chain enhancements will be key to sustained growth,' Mr. Tyas told The Hindu. 'We are looking forward to collaborating with industry partners to drive long-term success in India,' he added. In its first full year of access to this market, Australia exported 567 tonnes and more than volume, the entity is more keen in long term growth, he highlighted. 'The Indian avocado market is very much in its infancy. It will take time to grow the market, and we need to be patient,' the CEO said. Mr. Tyas said Avocados Australia would particularly be targeting premium market segments with its premium fruit quality and service. 'As the overall market grows over time, the size of the premium market will also grow and expand the opportunity for Australian avocados,' he said. 'We plan to focus our efforts over the next few years on trade activations rather than consumer promotions. There is a lot of foundation work that needs to be done in India to develop the category, but we are committed for the long term,' he added. With the Indian market flooded with Tanzanian avocados, Australia is focusing on its value proposition — consistent quality, superior taste, and year round availability. 'Our aim is to integrate avocados into Indian eating habits beyond just Western-style consumption,' Mr. Tyas added. 'We want to expand supply chain partnerships to ensure wider availability and optimal quality,' he said. 'We are also exploring collaborations with foodservice players to drive avocado adoption in mainstream menus,' Mr. Tyas said. Stating that ensuring the freshness of avocados was crucial, especially when exporting to distant markets like India, he said since avocados are highly perishable, the fruits require careful handling throughout the supply chain.

Australia's avocados tipped for next ‘priority' as China trade ties recover

Australian avocado exporters could soon benefit from the country's improved trade ties with China. Advertisement After a decade-long wait, the popular fruit was finally close to entering Beijing's pipeline for import negotiations. Before that, Canberra has to select the fruit as part of its priority list. Meanwhile, industry players from Australia have also participated in technical cooperation in China's burgeoning avocado sector. Canberra would first negotiate access to the Chinese market for apples and blueberries, while Beijing aimed to introduce jujube and kiwi fruits to Australia. The Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry had initially informed domestic producers that negotiations for the country's apples would likely be completed by the first quarter. This timeline is now pushed back to a date expected in the next few months, John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia, told the Post in an interview on the sidelines of the Inaugural 2025 China-Australia Avocado Symposium, held in Yunnan's Xishuangbanna on Wednesday.
