Denso in talks to buy Temasek-backed seed maker for US$500 million

[TOKYO] Denso is in final talks to buy a Temasek-backed seed supplier for around US$500 million, as the Japanese vehicle parts supplier deepens its expansion into the agriculture sector, sources familiar with the matter said. Singapore investment firm Temasek, which owns almost half of Axia Vegetable Seeds Group, is set to generate a profit from the sale, the sources said, asking not to be identified because the negotiations are private. Representatives for Denso and state-owned Temasek declined to comment. Netherlands-based Axia did not immediately respond to a request for comment made outside of normal office hours. A purchase would align with Denso's ambition to become a key supplier of industrialised greenhouses capable of producing food in any climate. The company is seeking to generate 20 per cent of its revenue from 'new value business' including food and agriculture, it said in 2023. The auto business currently accounts for more than 98 per cent of its revenue, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Denso acquired greenhouse maker and horticultural solutions provider Certhon Build BV in 2023, and has been developing robots able to pick fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes. It has said its share of the 700 billion yen (S$6.3 billion) market for greenhouses and adjacent segments is only about 2 per cent, with room to grow. For Temasek, Axia is the latest in a series of asset sales involving its investees and subsidiaries. Axia also sold its open-fields seeds business to India's Namdhari Seeds earlier this year. Olam Group, a Temasek-owned food and agriculture trader, agreed to sell a controlling stake in its agribusiness unit to Saudi Agricultural & Livestock Investment in a US$1.8 billion deal in February. Axia's lowered bumper sparks laughter and advice in viral TikTok incident

A humorous incident unfolded in a building's parking lot when a stanced Perodua Axia faced difficulty crossing a speed bump. In a TikTok video that has since gone viral, @axiandd, the driver attempted to navigate the spiral ramp. The lowered suspension of the Axia, a modification common among car enthusiasts for aesthetic appeal, caused the vehicle's bumper to scrape against the small bump on the ground. Amused by the situation, a member of the public stepped in to assist by gently lifting the car's bumper, allowing the vehicle to clear the obstacle. Despite the unconventional method, the tricky part came to an end successfully as the driver and the man who helped him through, shared a laugh over the incident. However, as the car completed the challenge, the bumper made contact with the ground, producing a loud echo throughout the parking lot. Fortunately, no damage was reported to the vehicle. Garnering over 232,6000 views and 3,204 likes, the video has sparked discussions among netizens, with many suggesting that the owner consider installing air suspension. Air suspension systems allow for adjustable ride height, providing the flexibility to raise the vehicle when approaching obstacles and lower it for aesthetic purposes. 'If it's like this, how about you switch to air suspension? It won't inconvenience you anymore. I know it's expensive, but Malaysia isn't suitable for using cars with cut springs, bro,' @ghostlove_1 commented. Referring to the bumper hitting the ground, @singkarad0 quipped the driver to put 'minyak gamat' at the spot it got hit. This incident serves as a lighthearted reminder of the balance between aesthetics and functionality in vehicle modifications.

M'sian woman's purse stolen from unlocked car in Kajang

BEING vigilant of one's surroundings is something everyone should practise at all times, regardless of the location. One woman recently learnt a valuable lesson after her purse was stolen from her unlocked car. The incident served as a terrifying wake-up call for her. 'From that day onwards, I have kept my car locked even when I leave it for a short while. 'I no longer place my phone or bag on any table when I'm eating out. You grow through experience, don't you?' she said in a TikTok video. The theft occurred while she was in a store for just five minutes in Kajang. In the video, a man riding a motorcycle approached a red Axia shortly after the woman had exited the vehicle. He then opened the driver's side door, looked around the car, closed the door, and briefly turned away. Shortly afterwards, he reopened the door, took what is believed to be her purse, and fled the scene. Among the stolen possessions, apart from the purse, were her identification card, bank card, marriage certificate, and driving licence. She had to pay RM265 to replace her identification card, a discounted rate from the original RM310. The woman jokingly remarked that she 'felt sorry' for the thief because her purse only contained around RM20, adding: 'He would have gotten caught for nothing.' Netizens advised her to treat the theft as a lesson and avoid being careless in the future. Others shared similar experiences, saying their stolen bags also didn't contain much cash or any valuables. 'My friend's bag was stolen, but it only had her baby's things — nappies and soap. I laughed so hard when the thief snatched it,' one user recalled, amused. Another user angrily pointed out that the alleged thief appeared physically fit and rode a well-maintained motorcycle, yet still resorted to stealing from others. Others said the incident served as a personal wake-up call, reminding them how a brief moment of carelessness could lead to serious consequences. 'I once had my wallet stolen at the night market — it felt like I was hypnotised because I was careless. We just take it as a reminder; there's wisdom in it,' one netizen shared.
