Egypt's Mufti Addresses Islam, Moderation in Confronting Extremism, Westernization
Mohamed Mandour In his speech at the 'Citizenship, Identity, and Shared Values of Coexistence' conference currently taking place in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Nazir Mohammed Ayad, Grand Mufti of Egypt and President of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, affirmed that Islam has established a sophisticated human civilization grounded in timeless values that resonate with universal principles—such as justice, mercy, mutual understanding, human dignity, and freedom of belief. He emphasized that these values were clearly embodied in the Constitution of Medina, which set a genuine precedent for coexistence under the framework of citizenship. Dr. Ayad warned of the dangers posed by extremist groups that have distorted the image of religion due to ignorance and misinterpretation of sacred texts. He called for a balanced approach that harmonizes authenticity with modernity in order to counter the challenges of westernization, extremism, and cultural alienation. He highlighted the historic role of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in championing moderation and fostering a culture of dialogue and tolerance under the leadership of the Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb. He further noted that Egypt's Dar al-Ifta adheres to the same Azharite methodology in confronting extremist ideologies and correcting misconceptions through scholarly, well-grounded fatwas that take contemporary realities into account and promote societal peace. Dr. Ayad also underscored the global role of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide in coordinating efforts to combat isolationism and fanaticism. He concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude to Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities for its warm hospitality and for organizing this important conference, which plays a vital role in advancing shared values and spreading Islam's message of moderation. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Mufti commends Egypt's Gaza reconstruction initiative adopted at Extraordinary Arab Summit
CAIRO, March 5 (MENA) – Egypt's Grand Mufti Nazir Mohamed Ayad lauded outcome of the Cairo-hosted Extraordinary Arab Summit that culminated in adopting the Egyptian initiative for the reconstruction of the war-torn Gaza, commending valiant efforts made by the Egyptian leadership, under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in coordination with the Arab countries in defending the Palestinian people's inalienable rights and facing attempts of forced displacement and demographic change in the occupied Palestinian territories. In a statement Wednesday, the mufti stressed that establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with Al Quds (East Jerusalem) as its capital, is a religious, moral and humanitarian duty. Ayad also praised the unified Arab stance taken up during the summit, considering it a substantial shift that would reclaim the momentum of the Palestinian issue to the conscience of the nation and assert absolute commitment to the two-state solution and explicitly reject any measures that could undermine it. He further stressed the immense importance of continuing the Arab, Islamic and international support for the Palestinian people. The grand Mufti also held the Israeli occupation responsible for the deterioration of the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, urging the international community to ratchet up pressure on the occupation to respect international legitimate resolutions and stop its repeated ceasefire violations. Ayad reiterated Dar al-Ifta's support for all efforts exerted to achieve just and comprehensive peace that will lead to the end of occupation. He called on the Arab and Muslim countries and the international community to continue their full support for the Palestinian people, rush humanitarian aid to Gaza and shore up the Egyptian initiative on Gaza reconstruction, in a way that brings an end to Israel's incessant aggression.
