Egypt's Mufti Addresses Islam, Moderation in Confronting Extremism, Westernization
Mohamed Mandour In his speech at the 'Citizenship, Identity, and Shared Values of Coexistence' conference currently taking place in Abu Dhabi, Dr. Nazir Mohammed Ayad, Grand Mufti of Egypt and President of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide, affirmed that Islam has established a sophisticated human civilization grounded in timeless values that resonate with universal principles—such as justice, mercy, mutual understanding, human dignity, and freedom of belief. He emphasized that these values were clearly embodied in the Constitution of Medina, which set a genuine precedent for coexistence under the framework of citizenship. Dr. Ayad warned of the dangers posed by extremist groups that have distorted the image of religion due to ignorance and misinterpretation of sacred texts. He called for a balanced approach that harmonizes authenticity with modernity in order to counter the challenges of westernization, extremism, and cultural alienation. He highlighted the historic role of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in championing moderation and fostering a culture of dialogue and tolerance under the leadership of the Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb. He further noted that Egypt's Dar al-Ifta adheres to the same Azharite methodology in confronting extremist ideologies and correcting misconceptions through scholarly, well-grounded fatwas that take contemporary realities into account and promote societal peace. Dr. Ayad also underscored the global role of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide in coordinating efforts to combat isolationism and fanaticism. He concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude to Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities for its warm hospitality and for organizing this important conference, which plays a vital role in advancing shared values and spreading Islam's message of moderation. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Egyptian documentary ‘Memoirs of M.A Draz' to screen at French Institutes
The film traces Mohamed Abdallah Draz's journey from his modest roots in Mahallat Diyay to his academic endeavors in Paris. Egyptian filmmaker Maggie Morgan's documentary Memoirs of M.A Draz is set for special screenings at the French Institutes in Cairo and Alexandria. The Cairo screening will take place on Thursday, February 6, at 9 pm, followed by a discussion with the film's executive producer, Noha ElKholy. The following day, the documentary will be shown at the Alexandria branch on Friday, February 7, at 7 pm. The film offers a deep archival and cultural exploration of Mohamed Abdallah Draz, one of Egypt's most influential Azharite scholars. Known for his progressive views advocating tolerance and gender equality long before the mainstream feminist movement, Draz remains a significant figure in Islamic history. Decades after his passing, his great-granddaughter, Noha ElKholy, uncovers a trove of personal letters, diaries and photographs, shedding new light on his journey from the rural village of Mahallat Diyay to Alexandria and, later, Paris, where he pursued scholarly excellence. Memoirs of M.A Draz had its world premiere at the Aswan International Women's Film Festival, where it won the Rashida Abdel Salam Award and the EU Prize for Best Euro-Mediterranean Film Addressing Women's Issues. It has also been featured at the Goethe Film Week in Cairo. The documentary is directed by Maggie Morgan and written by Taghreed El Asfouri. Noha ElKholy serves as executive producer, with editing by Amgad Shafik and Tamer Abdallah, cinematography by Emad Nabil, a musical score by Khaled Al-Kammar and narration by Sedki Sakhr. MAD Distribution manages the film's sales in the Arab world, while MAD World oversees international sales.
