Man jailed eight years, whipped for striking elderly man with wooden block in Miri

MIRI (April 22): A jobless man was sentenced to eight years in jail and three strokes of the cane by the Sessions' Court here today for causing grievous hurt to an elderly man using a block of wood.
Judge Azreena Aziz meted out the sentence against Kennedy Alban Sigai of Tansang, Betong, after considering several factors including his guilty plea, appeal for leniency, the severity of the offence, and public interest surrounding the case.
Kennedy was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous means.
The offence carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment, a fine, or whipping upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, the accused had intentionally caused grievous injury to William Ngau Taja, 63, using a block of wood.
He committed the offence on April 14 this year at around 8.40am at the bus terminal in Jalan Padang here.
The court ordered sentence to take effect from the date of arrest, which was on April 14.
Deputy Public Prosecutor David Bakit Nuing prosecuted the case, while the accused was not represented by legal counsel. assault Court crime elderly
