Indian kidnapped, mauled over low-priced jewelry
An Indian national was rescued by San Juan police after allegedly being kidnapped, beaten, and robbed by five armed men who reportedly have links with his business rivals. In Emil Sumangil's "24 Oras" report, police investigations revealed that the victim—who sells synthetic diamonds in a shopping complex in San Juan — had drawn the ire of competitors for selling his goods at very low prices. 'Sinasabi po nila na naapektuhan po yung kanilang negosyo. Gawaan ang biktima po ay nagbebenta ng sobrang baba ng mga synthetic diamonds. Ito po ay nakakapekto ng luha doon sa mga negosyo ng suspect,' said Police Colonel Deodennis Joy Marmol, San Juan Chief of Police. (They said their business was affected because the victim was selling synthetic diamonds at very low prices. This hurt the suspects' own businesses.) Colonel Marmol explained that the suspects allegedly hired goons to confront the victim. 'Sinakay po siya sa kotse. Nung nasa loob po siya ng kotse, sinaktan po siya at pinagbantaan po na "huwag ka nang babalik ng Pilipinas." Bukod po doon, kinuha po yung kanyang mga personal na gamit consisting po ng one million worth of synthetic diamonds na binibenta niya,' Marmol added. (They forced him into a car. Inside, he was beaten and warned never to return to the Philippines. They also took his belongings, including around one million pesos' worth of synthetic diamonds.) After being released, the victim immediately reported the incident to police, prompting an operation to track down the suspects. 'Naresolba po natin ito sa pamamagitan po ng record check po noong sasakyan na ginamit at saka po sa pag-backtrack po ng mga CCTV footage,' he added. (We resolved the case through a records check on the vehicle used and by backtracking CCTV footage.) Authorities have yet to release the identities of the suspects, who are currently under investigation. They have remained silent on the allegations. Despite the ordeal, the victim expressed gratitude for his rescue. 'Right now I'm feeling so much safe,' the victim said. Police assured the public that operations continue to ensure the safety of foreign nationals and to protect fair business practices in the city. — Sherylin Untalan/BAP, GMA Integrated News

PAGASA declares start of Habagat season
The state weather bureau, PAGASA, has officially declared the start of the Habagat or southwest monsoon season in the Philippines. According to an advisory posted on Friday, the announcement was made following the persistence of low-level southwesterly winds and the Frontal System over several parts of the country, as well as the weakening of the easterlies. The Philippines may expect occasional to frequent rains and thunderstorms, especially over the western section of the country while periods of monsoon breaks may also occur. The start of Habagat may also lead to the possible onset of the rainy season within the next two weeks. In a public weather forecast on Thursday, PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said the initial stage of the Habagat season had started due to the return of the Southwesterly Windflow, which prevailed over some areas of the country. 'PAGASA will continue to monitor the weather situation of the country. The public and all concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures against the adverse impacts of the Habagat such as floods and rain-induced landslides,' the advisory read. According to PAGASA's daily weather forecast on Friday afternoon, multiple weather systems may bring rains over several parts of the country. The Frontal System may bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Batanes, while the Southwesterly Windflow will cause cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, the rest of Cagayan Valley, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Occidental Mindoro. The rest of the country will be having partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms due to localized thunderstorms. Possible flash floods or landslides may occur in some areas as a result of said weather conditions. Meanwhile, extreme Northern Luzon may observe moderate winds with moderate coastal waters. Light to moderate winds with slight to moderate coastal waters may occur over the rest of the country. Temperatures in the country will range from a minimum of 27.2°C to a maximum of 33.2°C over the next 24 hours. Sunrise in Metro Manila will be at 5:26 a.m. on Saturday. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

DTI releases price guide for school supplies ahead of S.Y. 2025
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Friday released the price guide for school supplies in time for the upcoming school year opening in June. The department said prices of some items have been reduced to provide affordable options for parents and students. 'This 2025 price guide covers 195 stock keeping units (SKUs) across 12 product categories. Notably, 29 items have seen decreased prices compared to the previous year, with reductions ranging from PHP 1.00 to PHP 10.00,' the DTI said in a statement. The prices for four SKUs of notebook were cut between P5.00 to P10.00; for 24 SKUs of pad paper, prices have been slashed between P1.00 to P6.00; and a piece of pencil is now cheaper by P5.00. Hence, notebooks are priced from P15.00 to P52.00, pad paper ranges from P15.00 to P48.75, and pencils cost P11.00 to P24.00. Meanwhile, the price of SKUs for ballpens, erasers, and sharpeners remain unchanged. Pens are available from P3.00 to P33.00, sharpeners are priced at P15.00 to P69.00, and erasers remain priced at P4.50 to P20.00. Other school supplies like crayons, in various box sizes, range between P12.00 to P114.00. Rulers can be bought at P16.00 to P39.00. The DTI reminds the public to be careful when purchasing school supplies. Consumers must check the product labels, the number of leaves in notebooks and pad papers, among others. 'Every peso counts for Filipino families, especially during back-to-school season. This price guide is a promise that under this administration, no learner is left behind. We want every child, regardless of background, to step into the classroom with pride and readiness, and every parent to feel that the government is walking alongside them,' said Secretary Cristina Roque. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
