Suspect in South African student's murder killed in police shootout
A suspect wanted for the murder of a South African university student has been killed in a shootout with the police. Olorato Mongale's body was found on Sunday in Lombardy, north of Johannesburg, about two hours after she was reported missing having gone on a date. In the early hours of Friday morning, police officers found the main suspect hiding at a residential complex in the coastal town of Amanzimtoti, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said. The suspect, who has not been named by the police, shot at the officers, who returned fire and killed him, Brigadier Mathe added. Ms Mongale's death has sparked a fierce debate about the levels of violence faced by women in South Africa. The search for two other men linked to her killing continues, while police have arrested the parents of the deceased suspect. The suspect's mother is accused of enabling him to "evade arrest" by tipping him off about the police's presence at her house. The police say they the suspect's father is the owner of a VW Polo allegedly used in Ms Mongale's murder. Life is improving in Nigeria, Tinubu says
President Bola Tinubu has told Nigerians that the worst is behind them and that the country is getting better, in a speech to mark the end of his second year in office. Halfway through his term, Tinubu acknowledged the pain his reforms had unleashed, adding that he did not take the patience of Nigerians for granted. "Today, I proudly affirm that our economic reforms are working. We are on course to building a greater, more economically stable nation," he said. On the day he took office in May 2023, he announced the end of a long-standing fuel subsidy - a move that caused a huge surge in prices, leaving many Nigerians unable to buy enough food to eat. Tinubu said: 'Despite the bump in the cost of living, we have made undeniable progress. Inflation has begun to ease, with rice prices and other staples declining." Inflation was 24% last month, according to the official figures, compared to 22% when he took over. This is an improvement from this time last year when it stood at 34%. Weeks later Nigerians took to the streets in a nationwide protest that left several people dead. A fall in the rate of inflation does not mean that prices are falling - just that they are rising at a slower rate than before. Could Nigeria's careful ethnic balancing act be under threat? The World Bank predicts that Nigeria's total output, or GDP, will grow by 4% this year - a faster rate than the 3% when Tinubu took over. However, unemployment remains a major concern, with many graduates still complaining about not being able to find jobs. The president said he had little choice about removing the subsidy, saying the huge cost was a "chokehold on our nation's neck, strangling our nation's future", while allowing corruption to thrive. After his inauguration and under what he called a "Renewed Hope Agenda", Tinubu pledged to tackle economic instability, improve security nationwide, reduce corruption, reform governance, and lift Nigerians out of poverty. Public affairs analyst professor Adeosun Olufemi told the BBC he feels the president has made positive gains in some areas, adding that the governors of Nigeria's 36 states should take the blame for some of the problems over the past two years. "After the president announced fuel subsidy removal, money allocated to state governors increased heavily but what have they done with it?" he asked. The president, 73, won the bruising 2023 election with 37% of the vote – defeating former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former governor Peter Obi in a three-way race. There is massive speculation that some of the major political parties could form a coalition ahead of the next election in 2027 to challenge Tinubu, who is expected to seek a second term. South Africans pay tribute to acting 'icon' Chweneyagae who died age 40
South Africans are paying tribute to actor Presley Chweneyagae, who has died at the age of 40. In a statement announcing his death, his agency described him as a "South African icon" and one of the country's "most gifted and beloved actors". The South African government published a post on X describing him as "a gifted storyteller whose talent lit up our screens and hearts". Chweneyagae, who was born in 1984 in South Africa's North-West Province, got his big international break after starring in the 2005 film Tsotsi, which earned the country its first Oscar for best foreign language film. Tsotsi, a powerful crime film in which Chweneyagae plays the lead role, explores gang life in a South African township. Chweneyagae also starred in the Nelson Mandela biopic Long Walk to Freedom in 2013, as well as acting in various theatre productions. The South African Film and Television Awards described him as a "true legend of South African cinema" and a "powerhouse performer". The Ministry of Sports, Art and Culture released a statement highlighting his role in the popular South African series River and Cobrizzi. "The Department of Sports, Art and Culture, mourns the loss of a true trailblazer - a storyteller who held the soul of a nation in his craft," Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie said in the statement.
