Attempted murder arrests after two hit-and-runs
Five teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a stolen Mini Cooper was allegedly deliberately driven at people on bikes. The car was involved in a hit-and-run after being driven into two boys riding a Sur-Ron electric motorbike at about 12:30 BST on Thursday on Teyfant Road in Bristol, Avon and Somerset Police said. At about 17:30 BST the same day it was also seen following a 19-year-old man on a scrambler-type off-road bike along Fulford Road, before colliding with him on Hareclive Road. The man was taken to hospital with facial injuries, while the two boys on the electric motorbike did not sustain serious injuries. All five suspects have been released on bail. Insp Terry Murphy said: "We are keeping an open mind about this investigation and at this time we believe the incidents are linked and we're treating the collisions as a deliberate act." As well as attempted murder, one 16-year-old suspect was further arrested on suspicion of threatening a person with an offensive weapon, and for possessing a weapon for discharge of noxious liquid. Four of the suspects, two aged 18, one aged 17 and one aged 16, were additionally arrested on suspicion of having a corrosive substance in a public place and possession of a knife in a public place. Detectives are calling on anyone who saw the Mini in the area that day, saw either collision or who may have relevant dashcam or doorbell footage, to contact them. Insp Murphy said: "We want to reassure the community that we're carrying out a full and thorough investigation and we are taking these incidents extremely seriously." He added that there would be additional patrols by neighbourhood policing teams in the area in the coming days, as well as patrols by the mounted unit and the roads policing team. Gym equipment lugged up mountain for charity
More than 200 people from a fitness group and their families have taken part in a charity challenge to lug 1680kg of gym equipment to the top of Pen y Fan and back again. Women from Commando Bootcamp, based near Bristol in Yate, South Gloucestershire, took part in the ascent with family members on Saturday in aid of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Bristol's Southmead Hospital. They have previously taken part in several challenges, including a half marathon while carrying white goods in aid of the homeless in 2024. Bootcamp member Sian Donoghue said the latest challenge had raised more than £5,000 for the unit, which had helped look after her son Jack when he was born at 23 weeks old. "He was quite premature and it was quite a shock to everybody," she said of her son, who spent two months in the NICU before being allowed home, but sadly later died. "That was out of everyone's control and since [then] everybody has been so supportive," she said. Ms Donoghue said raising money for the unit had been "emotional", especially as other women in the bootcamp had also spent time with their children there. "Everything that goes on, it's incredible because I don't think people see, unless you've been in there, you don't see what NICU does for people." She added: "It's not just the fact that they are incredible to your child. "They're incredible to any family member that's in there. The nurses and doctors become your family," she said. "All the little things that you never see, so all the things that comfort a baby, they've got it all and that all has to come from somewhere and the only way they really get it is by fundraising," she added. Ms Donoghue said she had joined the group after the Covid-19 pandemic and they had since raised about £46,000 for local charitable causes over the past four years. Despite the weather being "horrendous" for their challenge, Ms Donoghue said it had been "amazing" to see everyone come together. "The amount of people that were donating, it was really lovely," she said. Follow BBC Bristol on Facebook, X and Instagram. Send your story ideas to us on email or via WhatsApp on 0800 313 4630. Violent and 'deceitful' former police officer jailed
A former police officer who suffocated a woman and subjected her to controlling and coercive behaviour has been jailed for three and a half years. Former Avon and Somerset PC Mitchell Curtis, 34, was previously found guilty by jurors of two counts of controlling and coercive behaviour, intentional suffocation, and criminal damage. The offences occurred in South Gloucestershire and were committed while Curtis was off duty, police said. Sentencing him at Gloucester Crown Court on Thursday, Judge Lawrie said Curtis was "deceitful" and his actions were that of "a bully", while Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall described him as "a manipulative and violent offender". The judge added that Curtis had made his victim feel that she would not be taken seriously if she were to report him and praised her courage at coming forward. More news stories for Bristol Watch the latest Points West Listen to the latest news for Bristol The jury had been told Curtis had been physically, emotionally and verbally abusive towards the victim over an 18-month period. The victim reported Curtis to the police in October 2022. He was arrested on the same day and suspended while a criminal investigation was carried out. At an accelerated misconduct hearing, held in February, Curtis was found to have committed gross misconduct and would have been dismissed if he had not already resigned. He has been added to a national barred list so he can never work in policing or other law enforcement agencies again. Following the sentencing, Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall said: "Mitchell Curtis is a manipulative and violent offender and he's now facing the consequences of his criminal behaviour. "The sentencing hearing gives us a further opportunity to emphasise how courageous the victim has been throughout. "I hope the outcome of the judicial and misconduct proceedings show how seriously we take offences like this and that we'll be relentless in our pursuit of the perpetrators of abuse." Suspension Bridge shuts to traffic over weekend
Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol will be closed to traffic over the weekend for refurbishments. The city landmark will shut to vehicles and cyclists from 19:00 BST on Friday to 07:00 BST on Monday while lights are installed on its two towers. Pedestrians will still have access, however. The closure will also allow workers to continue painting chains and erect scaffolding, staff said on the Clifton Suspension Bridge website. A diversion will be in place via Bridge Valley Road, Brunel Way and A369 Rownham Hill. Vehicles following the signed route will be exempt from Bristol City Council's Clean Air Zone.
