Heat health alerts issued across England as heatwave grips UK
Amber heat health alerts have been issued for much of England as the third heatwave of the summer kicks in. The official alerts have been upgraded for southern England, the Midlands and East of England. The warnings will come into force at noon on Friday and will remain in place until Monday morning, the UK Health Security Agency said. Less severe yellow warnings remain in place in place for northern England. Temperatures are forecast to go as high as 32C across England and Wales, with elsewhere in the UK expected to reach the high 20s. Friday could be Wales's hottest day of the year so far if the temperature exceeds 30.8C as forecast. The heat will continue into Saturday, when temperature may reach 31C in parts of central and north-east Scotland, making it the hottest day of the year so far north of the border. Sunday is set to be cooler as a north-easterly breeze sets in, though temperatures will still be in the high twenties and low thirties for many. There is also a chance of a few showers across some eastern areas of England. The heatwave will be over for most on Monday as cooler Atlantic air spreads, bringing cloud and some showers to northern and western areas. Child Q strip-search was gross misconduct
Two of three police officers who conducted the strip-search of a 15-year-old schoolgirl committed gross misconduct, a panel has found. Misconduct has been proven in case of a third police officer, after the girl, known as Child Q, was searched at her school in Hackney, east London, in December 2020. Child Q, who was wrongly suspected of possessing cannabis, was on her period at the time and forced to expose her intimate parts while no appropriate adult was present. Trainee Det Con Kristina Linge, PC Victoria Wray and PC Rafal Szmydynski, who were all constables at the time, denied gross misconduct over their treatment of the girl. Harvey Weinstein has been found guilty of sexual assault in a six-week trial in New York, after his first conviction in the state was overturned last year. Plastic surgeon jailed for trying to kill colleague
A plastic surgeon has been jailed for life for attempting to murder a colleague he wanted "out of the way" because he was a witness against him in disciplinary proceedings. Jonathan Peter Brooks broke into Graeme Perks's home in Halam, Nottinghamshire, in the early hours of 14 January 2021, wearing camouflage gear and armed with a crowbar, cans of petrol, matches and a knife. A trial in Loughborough heard Mr Perks had a "95% chance of dying" after being stabbed by Brooks. Brooks, who was convicted of attempted murder, attempted arson with intent to endanger life and possession of a bladed article, was told he would serve at least 22 years in prison. On the night of the attack, Brooks smashed conservatory doors and doused the ground floor of the house with petrol, intending to set it on fire. Mr Perks, a consultant plastic surgeon who had recently retired, was woken by the break-in and initially mistook the defendant for his son, before Brooks stabbed him in the abdomen. The trial previously heard Mr Perks's injuries were "of the most serious type", and included a bleeding liver, injuries to the pancreas and bowel, and an "extremely life-threatening injury" to the back of the abdomen. Brooks appeared via video-link from HMP Norwich after refusing to attend the court in person, having claimed he had a bedsore that meant he would be unable to sit for long periods. The judge said he was informed Brooks was physically fit to attend, and there was no reason he could not. Throughout the hearing, Brooks moved around in his room, occasionally standing from his wheelchair. He was sitting looking towards the camera as his sentence was handed down.
