Energizing the Future: Bahrain to spend $2bln on power and water projects by 2026
Bahrain will spend $2 billion on electricity and water works by 2026, with two major plants planned in Sitra and Hidd and a push towards solar energy. The government outlined the plans in a technical note covering current and upcoming projects in the power sector. It said the aim is to keep pace with rising demand and improve the backbone of the national grid. The draft budget for 2025-2026 sets aside BD400 million to upgrade the electricity and water networks. This covers cabling, substations, and improvements to reach and reliability. Two large projects sit at the centre of the plan: 🔸 The Sitra Independent Plant is expected to produce around 1,200 megawatts of electricity and 30 million gallons of drinking water per day. ➡️ First stage: The first stage—600 megawatts and the full water output—is due to come online in the second half of 2028. ➡️ Full operations: Expected by the second quarter of 2029. 🔸 The Hidd Plant will focus solely on water, with an expected output of 60 million imperial gallons per day. It's due to start full commercial operations in the second quarter of 2028.

Petrol price in Bahrain set to be adjusted based on global market rates
Petrol price in the Kingdom will be adjusted in line with global market rates, with financial support extended to eligible citizens. This proposed framework was discussed during talks this week between government and legislative authorities regarding the 2025–2026 state budget, focusing on adjustments to state support and new revenue measures. Talks covered plans to transition subsidies into direct financial assistance while maintaining stability in essential goods and services. Subsidies for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), kerosene for traditional bakeries, and diesel for fishermen would remain unchanged. The discussions also outlined an investment of BD400 million in power and water infrastructure over the next two years. 'Citizen Account' A programme will be introduced to assist with electricity and water bills at first homes through a 'Citizen Account', which will be structured in coordination with legislators to define eligibility and payment mechanisms. A corporate tax framework, based on revenue and profit, is being examined, with specific sectors expected to be exempt to protect employment opportunities for Bahrainis. Additionally, a pricing mechanism for businesses exceeding carbon emission limits is being considered as part of a strategy to diversify state income while ensuring Bahrain remains an attractive environment for investment. Cooperation Finance and National Economy Minister, His Excellency Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, underlined the importance of cooperation between the government and the legislative authorities to manage public spending responsibly while advancing economic plans. He noted that Bahrain had achieved a primary budget surplus following the completion of the Fiscal Balance Programme through a combination of cost reductions and increased nonoil revenue. Council of Representatives Speaker Ahmed Al Musallam stressed that budget discussions should prioritise enhancing living standards, increasing employment opportunities, and ensuring steady economic growth. Fiscal adjustments Meanwhile, Shura Council Chairman Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh affirmed that fiscal adjustments should be carefully managed to protect key services and maintain financial sustainability. Discussions also reviewed value-added tax (VAT) revenue, with figures showing that in 2024, businesses, residents, and visitors contributed 92 per cent of collections, while Bahraini citizens on low and middle incomes accounted for just 2 per cent, owing to VAT exemptions on 94 essential goods and 1,300 government services.

Blogger Awarded BD400 Over Emotional Distress
A Bahraini man, who was previously fined BD50 for misusing telecommunications devices, has now been ordered to pay BD400 in damages to a blogger after a court found hiscomments had caused her emotional distress. A civil court ruled that the defendant's remarks on one of the blogger's posts had resulted in psychological harm. He had previously been convicted in a criminal court and fined for online misconduct. Following that ruling, the blogger sought compensation through the civil courts, which upheld her claim and ordered the defendant to cover legal fees. The plaintiff's lawyer, Fatema Al Thuwaini, said her client had endured harassment and distress after the defendant posted offensive comments in response to her content. A complaint was lodged with the Cybercrime Directorate, leading to an investigation and subsequent prosecution. Al Thuwaini argued that the defendant's words had caused harm by subjecting her client to personal attacks. The defendant's lawyer, however, maintained that the remarks were general in nature and not aimed directly at the blogger. He also challenged the BD1,200 compensation claim, calling it excessive and pointing out that his client, a family man earning BD300 a month, was struggling with debts and financial commitments.
